OBJECTIVETo investigate the effects of top pruning on fruiting characters of Platycodon grandiflorum, and find the suitable stage, in which seed growth and development furtherly.
METHODOne-year old seedlings were chosen and planted in field. Plant height, branching number, fruit number per plant, 1000 grains weight were measured during growth and development period, respectively.
RESULTThe treatment of top pruning postponed in turn the flowering date, lowered the plant heights and the fruit number per plant, increased the branching number and influenced significantly on 1000 grains weights.
CONCLUSIONThe suitable stage of top pruning for producing seeds was from June 20th to July 5th.

At present, the objective of cutting and pruning Cistanche deserticola is to harvest in successive years and enhance the harvesting yield and quality of C. deserticola in the process of the artificial cultivating C. deserticola. An experiment was conducted focusing on cutting and pruning C. deserticola in artificial forests of Haloxylon ammodendron drip-irrigated with saline water at the hinter-land of the Taklimakan desert, according to different growth stages and lengths. The results were following: (1) The effect of cutting on C. deserticola was similar to that of pruning, which resulted in three kinds of morphological types, not related to the bloom and size of C. deserticola. (2) The growth forms were diversified after pruning. Among them, there had sprouting new body, died or maintaining life with no sprouting, mildewed on its surface layer, etc. However, some of new bodies were sprouting from the lower part of the old body. The death rate of bloomed C. deserticola was higher than that of the underground, and the death rate of the 40 cm in stubble height for C. deserticola was higher than those with the stubble height of 20 cm and 5 cm. (3) Most of the diameter of living C. deserticola after pruning was increasing, but some of them changed little. (4) The mildew and rot of C. deserticola and the broken of the roots of the H. ammodendron and the fallen of the point of the inoculated when it was dug, which would cause the death of the C. deserticola. On the other, the yield-increasing effect and the economic benefit of the techniques of the pruning of Cistanche would need further research and evaluate. Therefore, the application of this technique needs to be cautious.

7.Vietnam and the development of global DOTS program
Journal of Medical and Pharmaceutical Information 2001;12():9-10
The National development of global DOTS in Vietnam cured 90% of new patients with positive AFB from the tuberculosis and found 80% of estimated patients with tuberculosis the risk index of tuberculosis infection among Vietnamese was 1.7%. According to the estimation of world health organization, in 2001, the population in Vietnam was 79 million inhabitants. The newfound number of tuberculosis were 149,000 (189/100,000 inhabitants). The new estimated number of pulmonary tuberculosis with positive AFB were 67000 (85/100,000 inhabitants). The numbers of pulmonary tuberculosis with M. tuberculosis in the sputum were 53805 (80%). The number of pulmonary tuberculosis with positive AFB received DOTS were 53,561 (80.1%). The number of patients will be disease free were 48,892 (92.6%).

8.Establishment and development of Vietnam traditional medicine
Pharmaceutical Journal 2001;298(2):5-6
Vietnam traditional medicine has been established for many centuries and has been developing, including Chinese medicine and domestic medicine. Ancestor of the domestic medicine was famous physician "TueTinh". In the period when most of southeast of Asia countries influenced deeply by Chinese medicine TueTinh introduced a theory "Vietnam traditional medicine for Vietnam people". OBJECTIVEThe experiments were conducted to study specialty of seed germinating, plant growing and developing and cultural practices of A. edgeworthii.
METHODThe germinating and sowing test, growth habitants, photosensitive reaction of seedling from subterraneous seeds and above ground seeds on A. edgeworthii were studied in this experiment.
RESULT AND CONCLUSIONThe results indicated that (1) The water could not be absorbed by seed from plant above ground; (2) The underground and above ground seeds could normally germinate, grow, blossom and bear fruits, A. edgeworthii sowed in early May, blossomed in early September and matured in the last ten days of October; (3) The seed leaf of seedling grew underground; (4) The underground seed was produced from subterraneous branch stem which developed from node of seed leaf; (5) A. edgeworthii was shade demanding, high-temperature sensible short-day light plant. The flowering could be greatly advantaged by short-day light treatment (12, 10, 8, 6 h). Cultural practices were studied also in this experiment.

OBJECTIVETo understand the process of Cistanche tubulosa.
METHODThe process of seed germination and parasitism was observed using stereomicroscope.
RESULTSeedling of C. tubulosa sprouted after forty day without host root's contact in fields, a tube-like-organ formed and grew auger-type from host root, the tuber apex where touches host root swelled and formed haustorium. Haustorium intruded host root epidermis and vascular bundles, and released brown substances. Then, embryo bud with six or more young leaves formed, finally the swelled tuber-like-organ broken and seed coat shed. Due to the parasitism of C. tubulosa, the host root near stem site swelled, but the other part, shrunk and disappered gradually.
CONCLUSIONSeed of C. tubulosa could germinate indepently in fields. Tuber-like-organ formatin, haustorium formation and bud formation are key steps of C. tubulosa seedling development.
