Objective: To explore the mechanisms of the effect of isoflavone in reducing prostate cancer incidence throught studying the effects of isoflavone on apoptosis in PC-3 cell. Methods: Prostate cancer cell PC-3 was grown in RPMI 1640 medium supplemented with 10% bovine serum and 10 000 U/ml of penicillin/streptomycin in an incubator maintained at 5% CO 2 95% air and 100% humidity at 37 ℃. The respective test compound was added in fresh medium and the control cell received only the vehicle (MDSO). Apoptosis of PC-3 cells was analyzed by cell morphology under light microscope, agarose gel electrophoresis and flow cytometry. Results: Exposure of PC-3 cell to 50 ?mol/L GS, 75 ?mol/L DA and 75 ?mol/L GL after 72 h, the cell morphology indicated typical features commonly used to define apoptosis; agarose gel electrophoresis demonstrated laddered electrophoretic profiles of oligonucleosomal DNA fragments indicative of apoptosis, and flow cytometric analysis revealed a hyperdiploid population in the tested cells. Conclusion: Isoflavones could induce apoptosis in prostate cancer cells PC-3 and it may be the main cause of their role in cancer inhibition.

BACKGROUND:Several studies have demonstrated embryonic stem cells induced neural precursor cells can promote functional recovery in rats with spinal cord injury.
OBJECTIVE:To study the effect of in vitro cultured embryonic stem cells induced neural precursor cells in rats with spinal cord injury.
METHODS:Total y 144 rats were randomly divided into three groups. Experiment group and control group rats had spinal cord transection injury. Embryonic stem cells-derived cells were injected into the vertebral canal at rostral and caudal segment perilesional y for the experiment group whereas PBS solution was injected instead of cells in the control group. Sham surgery group rats had only laminectomy without any spinal cord injury and treatment.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:The experimental result showed that at day 21 post-injury, the regional expression of transforming growth factor-β1 was greater in rats from the control group in comparison to the experiment group (P<0.05). At each time point after spinal cord injury in rats, the expression of myelin basic protein in the spinal cord was significantly higher in the experiment group than the control group (P<0.05). After celltransplantation, Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan scores of the experiment group at different time points were significantly higher than those of the control group (P<0.05). Transplantation of in vitro cultured embryonic stem cells induced neural precursor cells can reduce the late expression of transforming growth factor-β1, and can increase the expression of myelin basic protein which contributes to the recovery of rats with completely transected spinal cord injury.

Chinese Journal of Lung Cancer 2003;6(1):67-68
BACKGROUNDTo explore the applicable value of transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA) in the bronchial submucosa.
METHODSTBNA biopsy was performed in 76 cases of pulmonary diseases, which had no endoscopically visible pathologic change. The results of TBNA were compared with that of brushing for cytological examination.
RESULTSThe correct diagnosis of the pulmonary diseases was 85.5% (65/76) for TBNA and 55.3%(42/76) for brushing cytology, and the correct diagnosis of lung cancer was 78.0%(39/50) for TBNA, 38.0% (19/50) for brushing cytology. Slight bleeding at the penestrated site was observed in 52 patients and there were no other severe complications.
CONCLUSIONSTBNA is a safe, simple and effective method in clinical application and could be used widely.

Objective To observe the effects of acupuncture on blood lipids of hyperlipidemia mice, and explore the mechanism of acupuncture against endothelial dysfunction. Methods 40 ApoE (-/- ) mice were randomly divided into control group (C), acupuncture at non-acupoint group (D), acupuncture at acupoint group (E), and simvastatin group (F) with 10 cases in each group. After 8 weeks, total cholesterol (TC), the plasma angiotensin II (Ang II), endothelin-1 (ET-1) and nitric oxide (NO) were measured with enzyme-linked immuno sorbent assay (ELISA). The mice myocardial angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R), and endothelin-1 type A receptor (ETAR) protein were detected with Western blotting. Results The blood lipid, the content of plasma Ang II and ET-1, and the level of AT1R and ETAR in the heart tissue were significantly lower, and the content of NO was significantly higher in groups E and F than in group C (P<0.05). Conclusion Acupuncture can inhibit the level of blood lipids in ApoE(-/-) mice, reduce the levels of Ang II and ET-1, increase the level of NO in peripheral blood, and inhibit the expression of AT1R, ETAR in heart tissue.

Objective To observe the effect of electroacupuncture on basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), Desmin and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK1/2) expression of rabbits with acute lumbar muscle contusion, and discuss the possible mechanism of muscle tissue regeneration and repair. Methods 40 male New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into blank group (BG, n=10), model group (MG, n=10), Weizhong (BL40) electroacupuncture group (WG, n=10) and local electroacupuncture group (LG, n=10). Lumbar muscle injury was established with blunt trauma, and the rabbits were assessed with Appearance Score. The WG and LG accepted electroacupuncture for 2 weeks after modeling. The lumbar muscle of each animal was stained with HE to observe pathological changes, and immunohistochemical staining was used to observe bFGF expression, and Western blotting was used to detect the expression of Desmin and ERK1/2 protein. Results Appearance Score was more in the MG, WG and LG than in the BG (P<0.01). Histological score ranked from more to less as MG,LG, WG and BG (P<0.05). The expression of bFGF ranked as LG, WG, MG and BG (P<0.01), Desmin ranked as WG=LG and BG=MG (P<0.05), ERK1/2 as LG=WG, MG and BG (P<0.05). Conclusion Electroacupuncture could promote the regeneration and repair of tissue after acute lumbar muscle contusion, which may be related to the up-regulation of bFGF/ERK signaling pathway.
