Objective: To quantitatively study the incidental extra-cardiac ifndings (ECFs) by coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) in patients with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD) in order to better recognize those lesions in clinical practice.
Methods: A total of 1169 suspected CAD patients received CCTA in our hospital from 2011-06 to 2013-03 and 1030 patients were enrolled in this study. There were 589 in-patients, 441 out-patients and 549 patients≥60 years of age,481 patients < 60 years of age. 3 physicians evaluated the incidental ECFs in the full ifeld of view (FOV) in different window level and window width for lung, mediastinum, thorax and upper abdominal areas. Clinical relevance of ECFs were classiifed by corresponding scores. Score 1, the patients with severe lesion need immediate treatment, score 2, the lesion with clinical and prognostic signiifcance and score 3, the ifnding without clinical signiifcance.
Results: There were 197/1030 (19.1%) patients having 224 ECFs and 27 (2.6%) patients having 2 ECFs; 90/1030 (8.7%) patients having 106 signiifcant lesions including 3 (0.3%) of lung cancer and 8 (0.8%) of pulmonary embolism; 107 patients with 118 lesions without signiifcance. ECFs were found in 114/589 (19.4%) in-patients and in 83/441 (18.8%) out-patients, P>0.05; 76/481 (15.8%) of patients < 60 years of age and 121/549 (22.0%) of patients≥60 years,P<0.05.
Conclusion: Unexpected ECFs detection rate was 19.1% in patients undergoing CCTA without further radiation exposure by reconstruction with the full FOV setting, and 8.7% of ECFs had clinical signiifcance. Radiologists should routinely analyze the extra-cardiac organs in CCTA.

Objective: To observe the effect of hypoxia on changes of proliferation ability of cultured human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (HPLFS) in vitro. Methods: HPLFS were randomly divided into two groups (experimental group and control group) by different oxygen concentrations. The oxygen concentration of control group was 21%. The oxygen concentrations of experiment group were 10%, 5% and 2%. The proliferation ability of HPLFS was detected by MTT colorimetric assay. The cell ultrastructure was observed by transmission electron microscope (TEM). Results: MTT assay results showed that compared with the control group, at the 12 h and 24 h, cell proliferation was enhanced with the hypoxia degree. At 24 h, cell proliferation showed significant differences. At 48 h and 72 h, proliferation of the cultured HPLFS in severe hypoxia group reduced significantly. Observed by TEM, at 24 h, not only the number of mitochondria, rough endoplasmic reticulum but also cell process increased in the cultured HPLFS in severe hypoxia group. At 72 h, the number of lysosome increased and the cell structure degenerated. Conclusion: Long-time severe hypoxia may lower the repair and remodeling abilities of periodontium, which might be one of the important etiological factors of periodontal disease under condition of high altitude.

AIM: To examine whether ischemic preconditioning (IPC) can protect against apoptosis in CA1 subfield of hippocampus following reperfusion of a lethal ischemia in rats and explore the role of IPC by inhibiting the expression of p53 in this process. METHODS: Wistar rats were used in the experiment. A global ischemia/reperfusion model was induced by 4-vessel occlusion. The rats were divided into the following three groups randomly: (1) ischemic preconditioning group (IPC group); (2) ischemia/reperfusion group (IR group); (3) control group. Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of oral propranolol versus atenolol in the treatment of infantile hemangioma(IH). Methods A total of 75 infants with IH aged 5-24 weeks were randomly divided into two groups: propranolol group(n = 30)orally administrating propranolol 2 mg · kg?1 · d?1 in 3 divided doses daily for 24 consecutive weeks, atenolol group(n=45)orally administrating atenolol 1 mg · kg?1 · d?1 once a day for 24 consecutive weeks. After 1?, 4?, 12?, 24?week treatment, the infants with IH were followed and adverse reactions were recorded. In addition, the activity of IH was assessed by hemangioma activity score(HAS)before and after 24?week treatment, and changes of HAS were compared between the propranolol group and atenolol group. Results There was no significant difference in the proportion of patients experiencing satisfactory regression of hemangioma between the propranolol group and atenolol group(70%[21/30]vs. 75.6%[34/45], P>0.05). Treatment failure occurred in one patient in the propranolol group because of severe airway hyperreactivity, and in another patient in the atenolol group because of drug resistance. The incidence rates of gastrointestinal reactions, central nervous system adverse effects, chills on the extremities and bronchiolitis complicated by airway hyperreactivity were all significantly higher in the propranolol group than in the atenolol group(all P<0.05). None of hypotension, hypoglycemia and bradycardia occurred in the two groups. Conclusion Compared with propranolol, atenolol shows similar efficacy but less adverse effects in the treatment of IH.

Objective To express virus-like particles(VLP) of enterovirus 71 (EV71) in Han-senula polymorpha.Methods The coding sequences of P1 and 3CD genes of EV71 were optimized accord-ing to codon usage bias of Hansenula polymorpha for achieving high expression , and then cloned into the ex-pression vector PMV of Hansenula polymorpha .The recombinant expression vector PMV-P1-3CD was trans-formed into Hansenula polymorpha AU 0501 .The transformants were stably cultured in selective medium (Yeast Nitrogen Base) and screened for strains with positive P1 and 3CD genes by PCR.Then an induced cultivation on the recombinant strains were performed in a medium supplemented with methanol to a final concentration of 1.0%and the expressed products were analyzed by SDS-PAGE and Western blot assays to select high expression strains .The high expression strains were cultured in 30 L fermentor and its fermenta-tion products were analyzed by electronic microscope after purification .Results EV71 recombinant expres-sion strains were successfully constructed .The results of SDS-PAGE showed that the expressed products had obvious VP3, VP1, VP0 protein bands with molecular weights of 26×103, 33×103 and 35×103, respective-ly, which were consistent with the expected molecular weight of the fusion proteins .Western blot demonstra-ted that the expressed products could be specifically recognized by the polyclonal antibody against EV 71-VP1 at 33 ×10 3 , indicating its high immunoreactivity .ELISA confirmed that the expression level of EV 71 fermen-tation products was reached to 200 mg/L.Electronic microscope analysis showed that the VLP of recombi-nant EV71 were 24-30 nm in diameter with normal structure .Conclusion The virus-like particles of human enterovirus 71 are successfully expressed in Hansenula polymorpha , which provides a foundation for the fur-ther development of EV 71 VLP vaccine .

Objective To establish a simple ,low cost and stable method to detect right ventricular pressure in mice .Methods A PE-50 duct length 15 cm(outside diameter :0 .9 mm ,inner diameter :0 .5 mm) was bent on one terminal and the other terminal was inserted into a 7# syringe needle to connect to a pressure transducer .This duct was intubated into right ventricle via right external jugular vein to detect right ventricular pressure in 80 SPF grade male C57BL/6 mice .Successful cases and operation time were re-corded .Besides ,40 SPF grade male C57BL/6 mice were randomized into the control group (n=20) and chronic hyperbaric hypoxia group(n= 20) .Mice in chronic hyperbaric group were raised in a hyperbaric chamber of simulated 5 000 m high altitude for 4 weeks .The control group was raised outside the chamber simultaneously .Right ventricular systolic pressure was detected with the PE duct .Left and right ventricles were detached and weighed ,and Hermann-Willson index was calculated .Results With this PE duct ,right ventricular intubation success rate was 90% (72/80) ,the operation cost approximately 3 to 5 min each mouse from the separation of blood vessels to detect the time needed for the right ventricle waveform .right ventricular systolic pressure[(39 .52 ± 4 .34 )mm Hg] and Hermann-Willson index(0 .356 ± 0 .039)of chronic hyperbaric hypoxia group were significantly higher than that of control group [(21 .24 ± 2 .7)mm Hg and (0 .256 ± 0 .020)] ,which has significant positive correlation (P<0 .01) .Conclusion It is simple ,fast ,stable ,costing low and of high success ratio to detect right ventricular pressure with this method .

Objective To investigate the clinical value of galectin-3 expression on fine needle aspiration (FNA) smearsandtissueslicesof thyroid tumors in distinguishing benign from malignant tumors. Methods Galectin-3 expression on FNA smears and tissue slices of thyroid tumors from 72 thyroidectomy specimens was detected by immunochemical method (SP method). Results Galectin-3 expression was high on FNA smears and tissue slices of malignant thyroid tumors, whereas there was no or low expression of galectin-3 on FNA smears and tissue slices of benign thyroid tumors. The difference of positive rates of galectin-3 expression between malignant and benign thyroid tumors was significant on both FNA smears and tissue slices (? 2=43.73 and ? 2=48.16, respectively, both P0.05). Conclusion Galectin-3 expression is different between benign and malignant tumors. Galectin-3 expression level is higher in FNA smears and tissue slices of malignant thyroid neoplasms than that of benign ones, suggesting that galectin-3 is a reliable molecular marker in distinguishing benign from malignant thyroid tumors. Galectin-3 expression with immunochemical method may be used in diagnosing benign or malignant thyroid tumors.
