Objective Co-stimulation cells is a kind of natual killer (NK)-like T cells, which can kill tumor cells.Previous studies show that lupeol , an natural plant extracts , can change the growth of NK cells ,γδT cells and their effects on tumor cells .This study aimed to investigate the effects of lupeol on human co-stimulation cells and colonic cancer cell lines SW 480 . Methods The peripheral blood mononuclear cells ( PBMC) from healthy volunteers were induced in vitro by different cytokines and transferred into Co-simulation cells. After SW480 and Co-stimulation cells were incubated with different concentrations of lupeol for different durations , methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) was used to detect the effects of lupeol on co-stimulation cells and colonic cancer cell lines SW480. Lactate dehydrogenase was used to determine the cell-killing activity of Co-simulation cells to colonic cancer lines SW 480 . Results The concentration of lupeol in 0.1-200.0 mg/L promoted the growth of Co-stimulation cells and inhibited the colonic cancer cell lines SW480.When the concentration of lupeol is at 12.5 mg/L, the cell-killing activity of Co-simulation cells to colonic cancer lines SW 480 was enhanced significantly compared with the controls (76%vs 40%, P<0.05). Conclusion Lupeol could promote the prolifera-tion of Co-stimulation cells, inhibit the growth of cancer lines SW480, and strengthen the cytotoxicity of Co-stimulation cells against co-lonic cell lines SW480.

Development of small molecule drugs is important for targeted and personalized therapy for cancers. However,it is staggering to take new compounds from the research bench to clinical trial pipelines and eventually to the clinical practice, due to the time, effort and costs. Most drugs need five years of development after discovery in the laboratory before they are ready to be tested for efficacy and safety.Compared to development of new drugs from scratch, increasing research efforts have been made to turn existing drugs to new uses to treat cancers, which may bypass years of costly work.Metformin used in cancer care is a good example of giving old drugs a new life. The activity of metformin on anti-cancer has recently drawn significant attention.Epidemiological and experimental studies have shown that metformin can cut down the incidence of cancer in diabetic patients and reduce metabolism-related cancers.Meanwhile, recent study has found metformin can induce autophagy of esophageal cancer cells by inhibiting inflammatory signaling pathway. In recent years, increasing studies have shown that metformin plays a major role in suppressing cancers via multiple mechanisms. In this mini-review,we summarize the updates of the research on metformin in cancer prevention and treatment.

Objective To analyze the relationship of the lateral angulation with the incision level after anterior approach operation for thoracolumbar fractures by evaluating the Cobb' s angle at different approach levels. Methods A retrospective study was done on 154 patients with thoracolumbar fractures treated consecutively with anterior operation from May 2004 to January 2008.The preoperative, postoperative and follow-up angle of coronal Cobb and the postoperative angle between screws and endplates on the anteroposterior radiograph were measured.According to the relationship between the injury vertebrae and the incision level, the patients were divided into two groups,ie,incision level ≥2 vertebrae group and incision level ≤ 1 vertebra group. Results All patients were followed up for 6-47 months(mean 37 months),which showed significant postoperative lateral angulation(P < 0.01)especially at follow-up (P > 0.05).The coronal Cobb' s angle showed insignificant difference before operation between two groups but it was increased after operation and during the follow-up(P <0.01).The screws A or B were more parallel to the endplate in two groups(P < 0.01),while the parallel of the screws C or D to the endplate showed no statistical difference(P > 0.05).Conclusions Compared with the operation with incision level ≥2 vertebrae, the operation with incision level ≤ 1 vertebra can more easily induce postoperative lateral angulation and exert a significant impact on implantation orientation of the vertebral screws A and B,which may indirectly lead to postoperative lateral angulation.
