Objective To collect the information about types and clinically-used materials for the dentures, and evaluate the current conditions and characteristics of prosthodontic treatment in Shanghai. Methods Three municipal public hospitals and two private commercial dental labs in Shanghai were served as sample units. The application information on fixed partial dentures, removable partial dentures and complete dentures from January 2005 to December 2007 was collected. The number of dentures in each sample unit, the total proportion of each type of dentures, and the proportion of each type of dentures in public hospitals or private labs were retrospectively analysed. Results From 2005 to 2007, the number of dentures increased by approximately 20% annually. The number of dentures made in private labs increased by 43.58% in 2005 to 2006 and 23.23% in 2006 to 2007.As to the types of dentures, fixed partial dentures constituted the largest proportion (74.49%-76.19% for public hospitals and more than 80% for private labs), while complete dentures accounted for the smallest proportion (5.07% to6.24% for public hospitals and 1.02% to 1.38% for private labs) . Conclusion With an ever-growing awareness of oral health, prosthodontics has been developing rapidly in Shanghai. The rapid increase trend of private dental clinics is noticeable. Fixed partial dentures constitute the largest proportion, while the proportion of complete denture gradually decreases year by year.

Objective To evaluate the left ventricular diastolic dysfunction by tissue Doppler imaging (TDI)in a suprarenal abdominal aortic coarctation model of Lewis rats. Methods Thirty male Lewis rats at age of 8 weeks were used. Myocardial hypertrophy model was obtained by suprarenal abdominal aorta banding with ligation. Mitral annular velocity measurement by TDI and regular two-dimensional echocardiography with M mode were examined at baseline and at 10-,20-,30-and 40-day post banding. Results Compared with baseline, the left ventricular end diastolic and end systolic wall thickness and ventricular dimension were progressively increased, while ejection fraction(EF)and fraction shortening(FS)were decreased(P<0.0 1).The left ventricle demonstrated centrifugal myocardial hypertrophy.Peak myocardial systolic velocity(Sa)at the mitral annulus did not change significantly throughout this study and there was no significant correlation with EF(r=0.216,P=0.071),and peak myocardial early diastolic (Ea),late diastolic(Aa)at the mitral annulus and Ea/Aa indices also were not stable after aortic banding and there were no significant difference in repeated measures at different time(P>0.05).But the E/Ea wasincreased and the index had a statistically significant difference(P<0.001).Conclusions The left ventricleshowed centrifugal myocardial hypertrophy in Lewis rats with abdominal aortic banding.E/Ea radio was a sensitive and stable index to evaluate left ventricular diastolic dysfunction.

Objective To explore the significance of peritubular capillary C4d deposition in histopathological changes, renal function and prognosis of the patients with antibody-mediated chronic rejection (AMCR). Methods Deposition of C4d in the kidney was examined by irnmunohistochemistry on routine paraffin-embedded sections using anti-C4d polyclonal antibody. Seventy-seven patients were divided into C4d+ group (n = 35) and C4d- group (n = 42). The relationship of C4d and renal function, histopathological changes and prognoses of allografts were analyzed. Results The number of patients with tubular atrophy and glomerular basement membrane proliferation in C4d+ group was significantly more than that in C4d group (P<0.05). Mean serum creatinine level was significantly higher in C4d+ group than in C4d- group 12 months after renal transplantation [(379.1 + 260.2)μmol/L vs (260.5 + 175.3) μmol/L, P<0.05]. According to Kaplan-Meier analysis, the one-year graft survival rate was lower in the C4d+ group (62.9% ) than in the C4d- group (83.3% ) (logrank P<0.05). Conclusion Patients with C4d deposition are associated with tubular atrophy and glomerular basement membrane proliferation. The serum creatinine level in C4d+ patients was significantly higher than in C4d- group at the 12th month after transplantation. More patients with C4d deposition lost their grafts during the study period.

Glutathione S-transferase (GST) gene, PcgstA was cloned from the penicillin producing strain Penicillium chrysogenum, which is important for understanding the industrial fermentation process. PcgstA gene has an open-reading-frame of 840 bp in length, which is interrupted by two introns. The deduced amino acid sequence shows about 50% identity to several characterized filamentous fungi GSTs. The recombinant PcGSTA in Escherichia coli were overexpressed and purified. Enzymatic assays showed that the recombinant PcGSTA had a specific activity with 1-chloro-2, 4-dinitrobenzene of (0.159±0.031) μmol/(min· mg). It was found that the expression level of PcgstA in the penicillin producing medium supplemented with phenylacetic acid, the side chain precursor of penicillin G, was significant down regulated than that in medium without phenylacetic acid. This result suggested that PcGST may be related to phenylacetic acid metabolism in the penicillin producing strain.

West China Journal of Stomatology 2003;21(4):301-303
OBJECTIVEThe aim of this article was to discover the corrosion resistance of magnetic attachments, which were encapsulated in stainless steel, when pH value of artificial saliva was lower than normal.
METHODSThree kinds of magnetic retainers were exposed for 6 months to artificial saliva with pH ranging from 5.6 to 7.0, thermostated at 36.5 degrees C. This study included electrochemical test as polarization curves, chemical test as immersion test and SEM to analyze the corrosion behavior of the materials.
RESULTSFe3+ ions in stainless steel released more than ten times in an environment pH 5.6 than pH 7.0. The higher concentration of H+, the more elemental release. That pH value of artificial saliva reduced may affect the corrosion speed. The magnetic retainers were not resistant to acidic environments during exposure.
CONCLUSIONTransient exposure of stainless steel to an acidic oral environment can increase elemental release significantly. So acid resistance of magnetic retainers was relatively weak, and it would affect the life span of magnets.
