1.A new triterpenoid tetrasaccharide from the root of Scrophularia ningpoensis.

A new oleanane-type triterpenoid glycoside, 3beta-O-(f-D-xylopyranosyl-(1-->2)-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl (1-->4)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 -->3)]-beta-D-fucopyranosyl-11, 13(18) diene-olean-23alpha, 28 diol (1), along with three known phenylethyl glycosides (2-4), was isolated from the root of traditional Chinese medicine Scrophularia ningpoensis. Among them, compounds 2 and 3 were obtained from Scrophularia genus for the first time. The structure of compound 1 was elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic method including 1D, 2D NMR and HR-ESI-MS.
2.Phenolic and amide constituents from Lycianthes marlipoensis.

Ten known phenolic compounds including [4]-gingerol (1), [6]-gingerol (2), [10]-gingerol (3), (3S,5S)-3,5-dihydroxy-1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl) decane (4), (3R,5S) -3, 5-dihydroxy-1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl) decane (5), [6]-shogaol (6), [10]-shogaol (7), gingerenone A (8), hexahydrocurcumin (9), and (3R,5R)-3,5-dihydroxy-1,7-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl) heptane (10), and seven amides including piperine (11), isochavicine (12), isopiperine (13), N-trans-p-coumaroyl tyramine (14), N-trans-feruloyl tyramine (15), N-trans-p-coumaroyl octopamine (16), N-trans-feruloyl octopamine (17), were isolated and identified from the roots of Lycianthes marlipoensis. Compounds 1-13 and 17 were isolated from the genus Lycianthes for the first time.

3.Investigation of preliminary clinical outcome following PCL-retaining total knee arthroplasty with posterior tibial slope

Objective To investigate the preliminary clinical outcome following PCL-retaining total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with 0°or 5°posterior tibial slope. Methods From Jan 2008 to Mar 2009, 84 patients (84 knees) with osteoarthritis (OA) underwent primary PCL-retaining TKA operations by the same surgical team. Among them, 27 patients (7 males, 20 females, with the average age of 69.5 years) underwent TKA using a cutting block and intramedullary cutting guide designed to impart a 5° posterior tibial slope (group A); 57 patients (15 males, 42 females, with the average age of 67.4 years) underwent TKA using a cutting block and intramedullary cutting guide designed to impart a 5°posterior tibial slope (group B). The preoperative demographic data and functional data had no statistical differences. The postoperative tibial posterior angle, maximum extension, maximum flexion and Knee Society Score (KSS) were compared between the two groups. Results All patients were followed up 12~24 months with an average of 15.7 months. No paralysis, wound infection, prosthesis dislocation and loosening were found. The postoperative tibial posterior angle was 5.7°±2.1° in group A and 0.9°±0.6°in group B (P< 0.05). The postoperative maximum extension was 0.8°±0.3°in group A and 1.2°±0.4°in group B (P >0.05). The postoperative maximum flexion was 115.7°±4.8°in group A and 101.1°±5.6°in group B (P< 0.05). The postoperative KSS was 87.6±5.9 in group A and 83.3±7.2 in group B (P >0.05). Conclusion Increasing tibial posterior slope improved the postoperative maximum flexion, but not the maximum extension and KSS, in PCL-retaining TKA.
4.Phenolic constituents from Lysimachia patungensis.

To study the chemical constituents of Lysimachia patungensis Hand.-Mazz., silica gel column chromatography, reverse phase ODS column chromatography, MCI and Sephadex LH-20, were used to separate the 95% EtOH extract of the whole plant of Lysimachia patungensis Hand.-Mazz.. The structures of the isolated compounds have been established on the basis of chemical and NMR spectroscopic evidence as well as ESI-MS in some cases. Twelve phenolic compounds were obtained and identified as quercetin-3, 3'-di- O-alpha-L-rhamnoside (1), myricetrin (2), quercitrin (3), rutin (4), 2-hydroxynaringenin-4'-O-glucopyranoside (5), naringenin 7-O-glucopyranoside (6), liquiritin apioside (7), licochalcone B (8), tetrahydroxymethoxy chalcone (9), methyl-p-coumarate (10), 2, 4, 6-trihydroxy acetophenone-2-O-glucopyranoside (11) and vaccihein A (12). Among them, compound 1 is a new compound, and compounds 5, 11 and 12 are isolated from the genus Lysimachia L. for the first time, and the others are isolated from the plant for the first time.
5.Two new sulfated sesquiterpenoids from Petasites tricholobus.

Two new sulfated sesquiterpenoids, megastigman-7-ene-3, 5, 6, 9-tetrol-3-O-β-D-6'-sulfonated-glucopyranoside (1) and 3-O-β-D-6'-sulfonated-glucopyranosyl-6-(3-oxo-2-butenylidenyl)-1, 1, 5-trimethylcyclohexan-5-ol (2), along with one known sesquitepenoid compound icariside B1 (3) were isolated from the whole herb of Petasites tricholobus Franch. Their structures were identified by their chemical and spectroscopic characters. All obtained compounds were tested for their cytotoxicity against four cancer cell lines.
6.Phenolic components from Petasites tricholobus.

OBJECTIVETo study the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of Petasites tricholobus and its phenolic components.
METHODPhenolic compounds were separated purified by column chromatographic methods such as macroporous resin D-101, silica gel, ODS, MCI GEL CHP 20P, Sephadex LH-20. Their structures were identified on the basis of physicochemical property and multiple spectral data.
RESULTNineteen phenolic compounds were separated from 95% ethanol extracts from P. tricholobus Franch. and identified as sulfonated benzyl glucoside (1), 3-(4beta-D-glucopyranosyloxy-3, 5-dimethoxy) -phenyl-2E-propenol (2), dihydrosyringin (3), tangshenosides II (4), 4-hydroxy-2,6-dimethoxyphenol-1-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (5), 4-hydroxymethyl-2, 6-dimethoxyphenyl-1-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (6), arbutin (7), rutin (8), kaempferol-3-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 --> 6)-beta-D-glucopyranoside (9), quercetin-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (10), kaempferol-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (11), afzelin (12), petasiphenol (13), caffeic acid (14), chlorogenic acid (15), 2-hydroxy-5-acetylbenzoic acid (16), p-hydroxy-benzoic acid (17), protocatechuic aldehyde (18) , and p-hydroxy-phenylpropionic acid (19).
CONCLUSIONAbove result shows that phenolic compounds contained in P. tricholobus mainly include simple phenols, phenolic glycosides, coffee acid and flavonoid glycosides. Among them, compound 1 was separated from the composite family for the first time; compounds 2-7, 9, 11, 12, 16, 19 were separated from the genus Petasites for the first time, and the others were separated from the plant for the first time. These compounds have been proved to have pharmacological effects such as anti-inflammation, antibiosis, antioxidantion.

7.Histological changes of the testis and epididymis in adult rats as a result of Leydig cell destruction after ethane dimethane sulfonate treatment: a morphometric study.

AIMTo quantitatively study the histological changes of the testis and epididymis as a result of a drastic reduction of testosterone secretion.
METHODSFourteen adult Sprague-Dawley rats were injected intraperitoneally with ethane dimethane sulfonate (EDS, 75 mg/kg) and the same number of animals were injected with normal saline as a control. At days 7 and 12 (after treatment), respectively, half of the animals from each group were killed. The testes and epididymides were removed and tissue blocks embedded in methacrylate resin. The cell number per testis was estimated using the stereological optical disector and some other parameters were obtained using other morphometric methods.
RESULTSThe EDS treatment resulted in an almost complete elimination of Leydig cells but had no effect on the numbers of Sertoli cells per testis. At day 7 after EDS treatment, many elongated spermatids were retained in the seminiferous epithelium and many round spermatids could be seen in the epididymal ducts. At day 12, a looser arrangement of spermatids and spermatocytes became evident, with apparent narrow empty spaces being formed between germ cells in an approximately radial direction towards the tubule lumen; the numbers (per testis) of non-type B spermatogonia and spermatocytes were similar to controls, whereas that of type B spermatogonia increased by 59%, and that of early round, elongating and late elongated spermatids decreased by 37%, 72% and 52%, respectively.
CONCLUSIONThe primary spermatogenic lesions following EDS administration were (i) spermiation failure and (ii) detachment of spermatids and spermatocytes associated with impairment in spermiogenesis and meiosis.

8.Effect of vasectomy via inguinal canal on spermatogenesis in rabbits.

AIMTo determine whether vasectomy away from the epididymal tail (via the inguinal canal) in rabbits can reduce the early postoperative effects on spermatogenesis.
METHODSTwenty-nine normal male Japanese white rabbits (aged 4-6 months) were subjected to unilateral close-ended (conventional) or open-ended (the cut end of the juxta-epididymal vas deferens not ligated) vasectomy via the inguinal canal. Ten days and 3 months after operation, testes, epididymides and vasa deferentia were removed and methacrylate resin-embedded sections prepared. The histology of the testis, epididymis and vas deferens was examined under light microscope, and the volume and diameter of the seminiferous tubules were quantitatively studied using stereological methods.
RESULTSNeither of the methods of vasectomy led to apparent damage to spermatogenesis on the vasectomized side in comparison with the contralateral sham-operated side, but the juxta-epididymal vas deferens on the vasectomized side was highly distended and contained numerous sperm 3 months after operation.
CONCLUSIONVasectomy away from the cauda epididymis has no significant early postoperative effects on spermatogenesis in rabbits.

9. Influencing factors of work-related musculoskeletal disorders among dentists

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders(WMSDs) among dentists and explore its influencing factors. METHODS: A total of 455 dentists from 9 medical organizations of Beijing and Fuzhou cities were selected as study subjects. The disease occurrence and mental workload were investigated using China Musculoskeletal Disorders Questionnaire and Subjective Workload Assessment Technique. The influencing factors of WMSDs were analyzed by multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: The total prevalence of WMSDs was 58.9%(268/455) among dentists. The top three body parts of WMSDs were neck(41.5%), shoulder(33.6%) and lower back(28.1%). The median of mental workload score was 58. Multivariate logistic regression analysis results indicated that female dentists showed a higher risk than male dentists(P<0.01) after excluding the influence of confounding factors. The higher the length of service, the higher their risk for WMSDs(P<0.01). Dentists who hold their heads sideways for long time, bent frequently, and use vibrating tools had relatively high risks of developing WMSDs(P<0.01). Dentists who use armchairs had a relatively low risk of WMSDs(P<0.01). There was no correlation between the mental workload and the prevalence of WMSDs in dentists(P>0.05). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of WMSDs among dentists is high. Individual factors, awkward posture and using vibrating tools are risk factors of WMSDs among dentists.Armchair use can help reduce the risk of WMSDs.
