Objective To evaluate the effect of oral health instructions in nursing of marsupialized jaw cysts. Methods 46 patients with cysts of jaw were divided randomly into two groups (education group and control), 23 in each. In addition of normal nursing processes in both groups, patients in education group were offered more oral health instructions, such as pathogenesis of jaw cysts, mechanism of marsupialization, wear and clean of a cyst plug, and oral hygiene maintenance. 12 months later, compliance, satisfaction, treatment effect and oral hygiene condition of the patients in the two groups were studied and compared. Results 100%of patients in the education group could return to clinical visits on time and 96%of patients did cyst rinsing after every meal, which were significantly higher (χ2=6.9, P<0.05) than in the control (74% and 70% respectively). Patients′satisfaction in the two groups were also significantly different (χ2=9.109,P<0.05). Patients in the education group were much more satisfied with the treatment procedures than control. The treatment effect of the cyst in the education group [good (83%), moderate (17%), not so good (0%)] was significantly (χ2=7.793, P<0.05) better than control (good (43%), moderate (52%), not so good (5%)]. The secondary infection rates in the two groups were similar (χ2=1.022, P>0.05). Oral hygiene condition of patients in the education group was better than control in Debris Index (χ2=9.576, P < 0.05) and Plaque Index (χ2=8.212, P < 0.05). Conclusions Oral health instructions played positive role in improving patients′ compliance, degree of satisfaction, treatment effect and oral hygiene condition in patients with jaw cysts.

Objective To investigate the toxicity of urban PM2.5 in Guangzhou on PC-12 cells. Methods PM2.5 was collected in Guangzhou city.PC-12 cells were cultured in vitro and divided into several groups, including the control group,PM2.5 groups with different concentrations and NAC pretreated group (pretreaed with 10 μmol/mL NAC followed with 100 μg/mL PM2.5 exposure).Cells were incubated with indicated stimulator for 24 h,then cell viability was checked with cell counting Kit-8 assay, the level of intracellular ROS was labeled using H2DCFDA fluorescence probe, cell apoptosis was measured by the flow cytometry and the expression of apoptosis-related proteins, including Cytochrome C,Caspase 9,Caspase 3 and PARP,were detected by Western Blot assay. Results PM2.5 has a strong toxicity on PC-12 cells when its concentration is over 25 μg/mL.After exposure for 24 h,the cell viability was markedly decreased. The results of flow cytometry and Western blot assay showed that PM2.5 enhanced the apoptosis of PC-12 cells with the upregulatios of Cytochrome C,Caspase 9,Caspase 3 and PARP.Pretreatment with NAC could significantly diminish PM2.5-induced PC-12 cell toxicity, decreased ROS generation and apoptosis of PC-12 cells, with the down regulations of apoptosis-related proteins. Conclusion PM2.5 can cause apoptosis of PC-12 cells by inducing oxidative stress, upregulating the Cytochrome C expression and activating Caspase9/3,which may be one of the mechanisms underlying PM2.5-induced neurotoxicity.

Objective To summarize the clinical characteristics, diagnosis and treatment of chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis(CMC).Methods The case diagnosed as CMC in the Department of Nephrology and Immunology of Shenzhen Children's Hospital in February 24,2014 was analyzed in terms of symptoms, signs, laboratory findings, gene tests and treatment process, and related literature was reviewed. Results The patient was a 14-year-old boy.The patient started to develop recurrent oral candida infection shortly after birth, then candida infection of skins and nails, which could be alleviated by antifungal agents, but easily relapsed.Since 4 years ago, autoimmune reactions such as autoimmune anemia, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, proteinuria, and hypothyroidism had successively appeared, and cytopenia began to palliate after administering Glucocorticoid and Cyclosporin, but easily relapsed when the dosage was reduced. The genetic test showed the case was of signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1) gain-of-function mutation.During the hospitalization, hemophagocytic syndrome (HPS) and stagnation of hematopoietic function successively occurred. The cytopenia did not improve and the patient suffered severe infection in spite of washing red blood cells 13 times and blood palate 3 times via infusion, together with high dosage of Dexamethasone and Cyclosporine. The peripheral blood cells and bone marrow gradually returned to normal after being treated by human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor combined with Dexamethasone and Cyclosporin.Retrieving the database in PubMed database,824 articles were found which were about CMC,and 39 of them were about the STAT1 gain-of-function mutation, including 120 cases. But there was only 1 domestic case in 2012,who was a three-year-old child, manifesting recurrent fungal infection of the skin. Conclusions STAT1 gain-of-function acquired mutation is one of the reasons that can lead to CMC.Autoimmune reactions prominently represented by cytopenia occur in a few patients with CMC.It should be alert on those who are with CMC and simultaneously with autoimmtne reaction of blood system. And gene tests facilitate the early diagnosis.

Objective To elucidate cerebral cortical response to esophageal acid exposure in normal individuals by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and the characteristics of activity. Methods Fifteen volunteers were received intraesophageal perfusion with either 0.9% of sodium chloride or acid (0.1 mmol/L HC1) solutions. The modified block-design model of fMRI scanning was performed simultaneously. All of 32 minutes were needed for resting (A, 8 minutes), 0.9% of sodium chloride perfusion (B,8 minutes), acid perfusion (C,8 minutes) and 0.9% of sodium chloride perfusion again (D,8 minutes). Each chunk was consisted of 160 scans and every scan contained 3 seconds. Six hundred and forty scans were collected in all. The clinical response to esophageal acid exposure was observed and the changes in the cerebral regions was statistically analyzed. Results After perfusion of 0.9% of sodium chloride or acid, 10 out of 15 volunteers had chemosensitive complaints, such as pain in pars laryngen pharyngis, heartburn and chest complaint. The initial active domains involved deutocerebrum, anterior part of callosal gyrus, left side of insula, two sides of amygdale and subiculum hippocampi, two outers of forehead cortex. The provoked regions of acid perfusion (C-A) and 0.9% of sodium chloride perfusion again (D-A) were as same as that of the activated domains by initial perfusion of 0.9% sodium chloride (B-A). The intensity and amplitude of most provoked regions increased gradually(D-A> B-A, P< 0.01). Conclusions The two different stimulations of saline and acid provoke similar cerebral regions that may act in the regulation of esophageal sensitivity. There are the evidences of the central mechanism of esophageal visceral hypersensitivity by acid perfusion.

Aim To observe whether the activation of aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 ( ALDH2 ) can protect a-gainst diabetes induced liver injury in rat model, and analyze the role of JNK pathway in the liver protection induced by activation of ALDH2 . Methods All male SD rats were randomly divided into three groups: nor-mal control group ( Con ) , diabetes group ( DM ) and ethanol + diabetes group ( EtOH + DM ) . After 8 weeks, the fasting blood glucose ( FBG) level, glyco-sylated hemoglobin ( HbA1c) level, serum AST and ALT levels were measured. The changes of hepatic pa-thology were observed by hematoxylin and eosin ( HE) staining method. The protein expressions of ALDH2, JNK and p-JNK in liver tissue were measured. Result Compared with control group, in DM group, the lev-els of FBG and HbA1c, serum AST and ALT levels were increased significantly. The structure of liver mor-phology was destroyed, disarranged and unclear, the hepatocyte was swollen, and a large number of inflam-matory cells were infiltrated. ALDH2 protein expres-sion was decreased, while the expressions of JNK, p-JNK and the ratio of p-JNK/JNK were increased. Com-pared with DM group, in EtOH+DM group, the levels of FBG and HbA1c, serum AST and ALT levels were decreased. The expression of ALDH2 protein was in-creased, accompanying with the decrease of JNK, p-JNK protein expressions and the ratio of p-JNK/JNK. Conclusion Activation of ALDH2 can protect the liv-er against diabetes induced liver damage in rat model, which may be relevant with inhibiting the JNK path-way.
