Journal of Korean Clinical Nursing Research 2017;23(1):100-109
PURPOSE: Nurses' resilience plays an important role in overcoming the challenges that nurses often encounter at clinic, and many factors have been examined which influence on nurses' resilience levels. Through this study, those factors were systematically searched and quantitatively synthesized. METHODS: In order to find relevant studies, both English and Korean academic databases were searched, and, finally, a total of 33 articles were identified and included in this analysis. RESULTS: The effect size on the protective variables was large and that of the risk variables was medium. In the protective variable group, the job variable group showed a larger effect size compared to the organizational variable group. Among the protective variables, compassion satisfaction showed the highest contribution on enhancing the resilience level of nurses. In the risk variable group, the personal variable group showed the highest effect size, which was followed by the organizational and job variables. Among the risk variables, the personal stress response showed the highest contribution to decreasing the level of resilience of nurses. CONCLUSION: This study provides a meaningful data for future studies in terms of developing evidence-based interventions to enhance the levels of resilience among Korean nurses.

5.Compassionate nurse: A concept analysis
Philippine Journal of Nursing 2019;89(2):52-55
The purpose of this article is to develop a framework on fostering compassion among nurses, by examining the attributes of the concept of compassion. This concept analysis utilized the Walker and Avant Framework. A review of literature indicates that compassion in nursing remains constant throughout the years even with changes prompted by the academe, healthcare and advancement in technology. Results show the defining attributes of compassion include full acceptance of duties and responsibilities and security in workplace to develop compassion. To become compassionate, a nurse must (a) be holistically prepared, (b) experience a sense of personal and professional development, and (c) possess the initiative to fulfill patient's needs. Thus, nurses can provide quality care and prevent the occurrence of patient neglect. This concept of compassion reveals that self-awareness and security from the organization can foster compassion among nurses.

6.On shoulders of giants: A message from an elder fellow to new diplomates
Philippine Journal of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery 2016;31(2):6-7
For the single ones among you, let’s give your parents special citation for having sacrificed not only once during your medical student days but twice-during your residency days. Their encouragement and material aid are phenomenal. Likewise to those married, your spouses either had a more challenging housewife’s role or became “house bands” during your busy training days.
So in this talk of mine which you may consider “unsolicited advice,” I will mention some idealistic-- even bordering on the philosophical -- reminders of some of our pillars in the specialty and my own experience as a budding practitioner. Also my personal pitfalls and how to possibly solve them. After all, when we reach our sunset years, we can discuss such topics ad infinitum.

7.Psychoanalytic Understanding of Empathy.
Journal of Korean Neuropsychiatric Association 2009;48(1):5-11
The authors reviewed the histories of the use of the term empathy, the different meanings of empathy, the origins of empathetic abilities, the referents for empathy, the paradoxical attitude of empathy, the therapeutic effect of empathy and the inadequate uses of empathy by referring to the recent psychoanalytic articles. We wanted to provide the psychoanalytic understanding of empathy for analytic psychotherapists. The important points for the psychoanalytic understandings of empathy were as follows:First, empathy is not a goal, but a method in the therapeutic process. Second, the empathetic attitude can be started at the beginning of treatment, yet it takes time for empathy to function in the treatment. Third, when providing empathy, a therapist needs both a subjective sense of sympathy for a patient and objective observation of the interaction between them during the treatment sessions. Fourth, a therapist needs to decrease his/her own narcissistic and omnipotent aspects and to use structured receptivity when providing empathy. Fifth, the process of empathy can be thought to be the result of the interaction between the patient and the therapist. Sixth, it may be more useful for a therapist to understand a patient through empathy rather than to provide a cure for a patient through empathy.

8.Empathy In Informal Caregiving: Extension of A Concept from Professional Practice.
Hae Jung LEE ; Patricia F BRENNAN
Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing 1999;29(5):1123-1133
The concept of empathy was examined in the professional caregiving relationship and its application was extended to the context of informal caregiving. Using the Lazarus and Folkman model. the influence of empathy on the caregiver's experience in the caregiving relationship was illustrated. The effects of the caregiver's empathy on his/her own caregiving outcomes were investigated by examining the relationship between empathy and burnout experience and life satisfaction. Empathy increased emotional exhaustion while increased personal accomplishment and personalization. indicating conflicting relationship between empathy and burnout. This conflict relationship between empathy and burnout can be explained by suggesting the distinct roles of two dimensions of empathy: emotional and caregiving context and to examine the definite roles of two dimensions of empathy were suggested.

Child Health Nursing Research 2017;23(4):459-469
PURPOSE: Nurses experience burnout related to various factors. For this descriptive research job stress, compassion satisfaction, and compassion fatigue were examined as to their relationship to burnout in nurses from children's hospital. METHODS: The participants were 305 nurses working in children's hospital. Self-report questionnaires were used to measure job stress, compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue and burnout. RESULTS: Nurses in children's hospital experienced a greater than moderate degree of job stress, compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue and burnout, whereas differences existed according to general characteristics. Job stress, compassion fatigue and burnout showed a significant positive correlation and results of compassion fatigue and burnout were similar. Also, job stress, compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue were associated with burnout in nurses working in children's hospital. CONCLUSION: Findings indicate that as longer work experience is accompanied by higher job stress and burnout, it is necessary to develop intervention programs to reduce burnout among career nurses exposed to greater job stress in children's hospital.
