Objective To assess the normative value of motor unit action potential of trapezius electromyography(EMG)and the amplitude of compound muscle action potential(CMAP)of accessory nerve. Methods Standard EMG and CMAP of accessory nerve were recorded from upper trapezius muscle in 100 healthy volunteers. For accessory nerve,it was stimulated in the upper sternocleidomastoid muscle and was recorded in the junction of the neck and shoulder. For trapezius EMG,it was recorded also in the junction of the neck and shoulder, includiag spontaneous activity, motor unit action potential and recruitment pattern. Results The amplitude, duration, polyphasic wave of motor unit action potential was(610.7±79.2)μV,(11.2±1.5)ms,(11.7±1.2)% respectively. The amplitude of compound muscle action potential of accessory nerve was(8.7±2.3)mV.Conclusion The electromyography of trapezius and CMAP of accessory nerve can be examined accurately.
4.Organotypic cerebral slice culture and the course of neuronal development in it
Journal of Peking University(Health Sciences) 2003;0(04):-
Objective:To establish a method of organotypic cerebral culture. So as to pave the way for building some neurodegenerative disease models. Methods:Organotypic cerebral cultures were prepared from prefrontal brain of neonatal SD rats. After culturing 7 to 14 days, 3 weeks, 4 weeks and 8 weeks, respectively, cerebral slices were fixed, dehydrated and sectioned in cryostat. The sections proceeded with Nissl staining and neurofilament high molecular weight (NFH) immunohistochemical staining. The difference was observed between controls and cultured slices using normal rats as controls. Results:Nissl staining showed that pyramidal neurons in cultured slices were increased in volume and lightened in staining. The delaminating construction was clear from 1 to 4 weeks after culturing. In cultured slices, immunohistochemical staining showed that NFH positive pyramidal cells appeared on layer Ⅴ on the tenth day and on both layers Ⅴ and Ⅲ after culturing 12 days. In the control group, NFH positive pyramidal cells appeared on layer Ⅴin 5-day-old rats, and appeared on both layers Ⅴand Ⅲ in over 3-week-old rats. In cultured cerebral slices, the number of pyramidal neurons on layer Ⅴ in M1 area was invariable from 12 days to 2 months. Conclusion:Orgaotypic cerebral culture can be used to study postnatal development for neocortex and build some in vitro models for neurodegenerative diseases.

Chinese Journal of Neurology 2011;44(11):739-741
Objective To validate the technique and to establish the reference values of triple stimulation technique(TST)in healthy Chinese adults. Methods One hundred healthy subjects were recruited to undergo TST from April 2010 to February 2011 in both abductor digiti minimi. The TST combines transcranial magnetic stimulation(TMS)of the motor cortex with peripheral collision studies.Three stimuli were given, leading to two collisions.A first magnetic stimulus was applied to the scalp overlying the motor cortex. After a delay,an electric stimulus was applied over the ulnar nerve at the wrist. The delay was chosen so that the action potentials descending from the cortex collided with the antidromic action potentials evoked at the wrist, with the collision site at the wrist and above. After another delay, another electrical stimulus was applied to Erb' s point. This delay was chosen so that ascending antidromic action potentials evoked by wrist stimulation collided at or distal to Erb' s point. At the same time,TST test curves were recorded. The TST test curve was compared with a TST control curve in which the first stimulus was applied to Erb' s point and the other two stimulus sites were the same as the test curve.Control stimuli were thus applied successively to Erb' s point, the wrist,Erb' s point.TST quantifies the number of conducting central motor neurons(expressed by the TST amplitude ratio). The values were compared among genders, age groups, arm length and sides respectively. Results The TST amplitude ratio(TSTteat/TSTcontrol)was 85.0% ± 6.7%.There were no difference among genders, age groups, arm length and sides respectively. The TST amplitude ratio were 85.0% ± 2.6% and 85.0% ± 8.7%,respectively in subjects with arm length 61-70 cm and 71-80 cm.Conclusion TST could be examined precisely and the normative value could be got.

Objective To introduce the use of artificial lumbar intervertebral disc replacement for the treatment of lumbar disc degenerative diseases and lumbar disc herniation accompanying evident disc space narrowing. Methods Thirty-one cases(37 discs) of artificial lumbar disc replacement were performed using SB Charite Ⅲ from April 1998 to April 2000. Among them, disc degenerative diseases were seen in 16 cases (18 discs), disc herniation accompanying evident disc space narrowing in 13 cases (17 discs), recurrent disc herniation in 2 cases. Results All the cases were followed up from 17 to 41 months(mean, 26 months) . The clinical outcomes were excellent in 23 cases, good in 6 cases, fair in 2 cases. The mobility of the operated level had 4.0? anterior flexion and 5. 1? posterior extension after operation and 9. 1? on total mobility. Meanwhile, the operated intervertebral space got an average of 4. 2 mm higher than that before the surgery. Because of technical problem, a slight displacement of the core occurred in one case without any clinical symptoms and signs. Conclusion Artificial disc replacement is a new operation for the treatment of lumbar disc degenerative diseases and disc herniation accompanying evident disc space narrowing.

Objective To study the effect of mini percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (MPCNL) for non-nephredema kidney calculi. Methods A total of 47 patients with non-nephredema kidney calculi were enrolled in this study. Physiological saline solution was infused into the kidney through a ureteral catheter to induce hydronephrosis. C-arm X-ray machine was employed in percutaneous puncture and Wolf EMS was used to smash the calculi. Results The mean operation time was (120?35) min.The calculi were removed through one passage in 38 cases, through two passages in 6, and three passages in 3. Among the 47 patients, the MPCNL was performed once in 35, and twice in 12. The stone-free rate was 83.0% (39/47) and final stone-free rate was 93.6% (44/47). No complications were noted in all the patients. Conclusions Highly skilled technique is necessary in MPCNL for non-nephredema kidney calculi. The MPCNL is a safe, minimally invasive, and effective method. By using MPCNL, patients have less trauma, lower rate of calculi remaining, and quick recovery. As long as the surgeons are familiar with the technique of MPCNL and the anatomy of non-nephredema kidney, the therapeutic outcome can be as good as that in the patients with nephredema renal calculi.
