BACKGROUND:The incidence of complications folowing conventional repairing for the ruptured tendon is up to 73%, such as delayed healing, adhesion, secondary rupture. These complications severely affect ankle joint function of the patients. OBJECTIVE:To reduce the complications folowing the repair and investigate the role of hernia repair materials in the repairing of ruptured Achiles tendon. METHODS:Eleven patients who underwent repair of ruptured Achiles tendon were retrospectively studied. Among them there were eight males and three females with the mean age of 42 years (26-58 years). Three cases were injured in left side and eight cases were in right side; four cases were open injury by sickle-induced damage and seven cases were closed injury by exercise-induced damage. The hernia repair materials after pruning was applied with a “wrap” method to strengthen the anastomosis repair of Achiles tendon after the conventional repair surgery had been completed. At the time of folow-up, al patients were observed for postoperative local appearance and function recovery, and assessed with Arner Lindholm standards. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:The folow-up interval was 6-45 months (average 24.5 months). Two cases were lost to folow-up. According to the Arner Lindholm standards, the effects were excelent in seven cases (78%) and good in two cases (22%). Local appearance and function recovered wel postoperatively, and no complications occurred such as wound infection, secondary rupture and so on. A “wrap” method with hernia repair materials is suggested to strengthen the anastomosis repair of ruptured Achiles tendon after the conventional repair surgery is completed, it can significantly promote the healing of Achiles tendon ruptured end anastomosis, prevent Achiles tendon recurrent ruptures, local adhesion and infection.

AIM To investigate the effects of Tea Po lyp henols on induction of apoptosis in human liver cancer cell etc. Telomerase acti vity of BEL-7404 cells was dramatically declined during the cell incuba tion with Tea Polyphenols. METHODS MTT colorimetric assay and trypan b lue exclusion method were used to examine the growth inhibition ofTea Polyphenols on BEL-7404 cells. Telomerase activity in cell was determined by PCR-ELISA method. Cell morphology and DNA gel electrophoresis were used to observe the apoptosis. RESULTS The solution of Tea Polyphenols showed dose-dependent and time-dependent inh ibitory effects on the proliferation on BEL-7404 cell line. After treatment wit h 0 2 and 0 1 g?L -1 tea polyphenols for 48 hours, cells displayed DNA ladder bands and typical morphological change of apoptosis included: ce ll shrinkage, membrane blebbing, chromatin condensation, nuclear fragmentation etc. Telomerase activit y of BEL-7404 cells was dramatically declined during the cell incubation with Tea Polyphenols. CONCLUSION Tea Polyphenols has growth inhibiti ng effect and may induce apoptosis in BEL-7404 in a certain dose range. The ant icancer mechanism of Tea Polyphenols might be related to the inhibition of telom erase activity.

To improve the sensitivity of molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensors, a Pd nanoparticles-modified molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) film for the determination of trimethoprim (TMP) was developed by thermal polymerization with N, N′-methylene diacrylamide as a functional monomer, Pd nanoparticle as a dopant and ethylene glycol maleic rosinate acrylate as a crosslinking agent. The morphologies and chemical structures of the Pd nano-materials and the imprinted films were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The electrochemical properties of the nano-doped and undoped MIP sensors were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Results showed that the morphologies and chemical structures and the electrochemical properties of the doped molecularly imprinted sensor were remarkably different from those of the undoped imprinted sensor.Linear responses of the imprinted sensor to TMP were observed for concentrations ranging from 5.0×10-7 mol/L to 4.0×10-3 mol/L (R=0.9995), with a detection limit of 3.2×10-8 mol/L (S/N=3).The Pd nanoparticle doped MIP sensors exhibited high selectivity. The chronoamperometry showed that no interference from potential interfering species such as sulfamethoxazole, sulfadiazine, glucose, and urea were noted. The proposed electrochemical sensor was used to determine TMP in actual samples, with average recoveries of 96.8%-102.0%.

Objective To investigate the variations of the spatial position and overlap ratio for gross tumor volume (respiratory phase 50%) (GTV50) and internal gross tumor volume (IGTV) of primary thoracic esophageal cancer during conventional fractionated radiotherapy based on repeated four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) scans. Methods Thirty-three patients with thoracic esophageal cancer underwent contrast-enhanced 4DCT scans before radiotherapy and at the 10th and 20th fractions of radiotherapy.Scans were registered to the baseline 4DCT scan using bony landmarks. The GTV50 was delineated by the same radiotherapist on each 4DCT imaging data set,and the IGTV was constructed accordingly. The target volume, degree of inclusion (DI),and matching index (MI) were compared in different phases. Results The volumes of GTV50 and IGTV decreased along with treatment course. No significant changes in the centroid position were observed for the GTV50 and IGTV.The median DIs of the target volumes at the 10th and 20th fractions in the original target volume were 0.75 and 0.63(P =0.000) for GTV50 and were 0.79 and 0.66(P=0.000) for IGTV,while the median MIs were 0.61 and 0.56(P=0.002) for GTV50 and were 0.68 and 0.58 (P =0.005) for IGTV.A positive correlation between the variation of volume ratio and the variation of DI was found for GTV50 and IGTV (r =0.632,r =0.783),and the variation of volume ratio was also positively correlated with the variation of MI (r =0.387,r =0.483) ;the 3D vector was negatively correlated with the MI (r =-0.455,r =-0.438).Conclusions During conventional fractionated radiotherapy, the variation of spatial position is less than 0.8 cm for GTV50 and IGTV of primary thoracic esophageal cancer, and the decline of the target leads to varying degrees of decreases in DI and the MI.

Objective To compare volumetric size, conformity index (CI), degree of inclusion (DI) of internal gross target volumes (IGTV) delineated on 4D-CT-MIP and PET-CT images for primary thoracic esophageal cancer. Methods Fifteen patients with thoracic esophageal cancer sequentially underwent enhanced 3D-CT, 4D-CT and PET-CT simulation scans. IGTVMIP was obtained by contouring on 4D-CT maximum intensity projection ( MIP). The PET contours were determined with nine different threshold methods (SUV≥2?0, 2?5, 3?0, 3?5), the percentages of the SUVmax(≥20%, 25%, 30%, 35%, 40%) and manual contours. The differences in size, conformity index (CI), degree of inclusion ( DI) of different volumes were compared. Results The volume ratios ( VRs) of IGTVPET2. 5 to IGTVMIP , IGTVPET20% to IGTVMIP, IGTVPETMAN to IGTVMIP were 0?86, 0?88, 1?06, respectively, which approached closest to 1. The CIs of IGTVPET2?0,IGTVPET2.5,IGTVPET20%,IGTVPETMAN and IGTVMIP which were 0?55, 0?56, 0?56, 0?54,0?55, respectively, were significantly larger than other CIs of IGTVPET and IGTVMIP (Z= -3?408-2?215,P <0?05). There were no statistical significance in the DIs of IGTVMIP and IGTVPET2.5,IGTVMIP and IGTVPET20%, IGTVMIP and IGTVPETMAN(0?77,0?82,0?71,0?67, 0?68,0?82,P>0?05). Conclusions The targets delineated based on SUV threshold setting of≥2?5, 20% of the SUVmax and manual contours on PET images correspond better with the target delineated on maximum intensity projection of 4D-CT images than other SUV thresholding methods.
