1.Malignant Cologastric Fistula: Report of three cases.

Malignant cologastric fistulas are relatively rare. The fistulas probably result from the contiguous growth of a tumor or tumors as they permeate and penetrate all layers of the adjacent viscus and because of the behavior characteristics of mucinoid tumor types under going avascular necrosis aided by digestion of gastric juices. An almost constant finding in cases of cologastric fistulas originating from the colon cancer is that the tumors are bulky, infiltrating, and associated with a marked inflammatory reaction. Formation of the fistulous communications depend on the anatomic locations of the primary tumor. We experienced three cases of malignant cologastric fistulas recently, and we report these three cases.

2.To remark 3 cases of digestion tract tuberculosis: experiences in diagnosis and treatment

3 cases of digestion tract tuberculosis treated in Hospital 108 were presented. The first was operated because of intestinal obstruction, the second because of severe gastrointestinal bleeding, but biopsy showed that these two patients were treated intensively by antituberculosis chemotherapy with good success. The third was diagnosed and treated very lately loading to unsatisfied results. Therefore, it should be tried to treat with antituberculosis drug initially

3.The Evaluation of Metabolizable Energy of Angelica Keiskei (Angelica utilis Makino) Products.

We conducted comparative study on metabolizable energy content of extracts of angelica keiskei and its byproduct. Total six different groups consisting of five test groups treated with angelica keiskei and one control group were compared. Each of the five test groups were given 30% of one of whole plant, extracts, fermented of extracts, byproduct and extracts plus byproduct, respectively, mixed with AIN93M. After 3 days of adjustment period, all groups were subjected to 4 days of test period during which the amounts of feed intake and excretion were measured everyday. All feces were treated for the prevention of decomposition and changes before its energy content were measured using a bomb calorimeter. The amount of excretion was 4.8 +/- 0.3 g/rat/3 days in control group and 9.9-15.0 g/rat/3 days in the groups were added with extracts of angelica keiskei indicating that the angelica keiskei-treated groups produce 2-3 times more excretion. Metabolic energy of control diet was 4,133.3 kcal. This was found to be 15 to 20% higher compared with the metabolic energy content ranging from 3,117.0 kcal/kg (extracts of angelica keiskei) to 3,259.8 kcal/kg (extracts plus byproducts) angelica keiskei-treated groups. This is interpreted as the result of the decreased metabolic energy in the test diets were substituted with 30% of ngelica keiskei-treated ingredient which has low metabolic content itself. One notable finding is that the metabolic content of the group mixed with byproducts and extracts (1,763.0 kcal/kg) is 27% higher than that of extracts of angelica keiskei (1,286.8 kcal/kg) indicating that mechanical grinding increases the rate of digestion and absorption increasing, in turn, the energy content used in the body. The results of analysis of overall caloric absorption showed absorption rate in order of Whole plant < extracts < byproduct < extract plus byproduct < fermented of extract.

4.Factors affecting the Fatigue of Hospitalized Women Cancer Patients Receiving Chemotherapy.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify factors that influence fatigue in hospitalized women cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. METHODS: The participants were 117 women cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. The instruments used in this study were physical symptoms, mood state, family support, and fatigue scales for patients with cancer. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression with the IBM SPSS 19.0 program. RESULTS: Fatigue showed significant correlation with physical symptoms such as side effects as well as sub-elements of mood status such as anxiety-depression, vitality, anger and family support. Fatigue-anticipating variables were found to be some sub-elements of mood state such as anxiety-depression (beta=.61, t=10.40, p<.001), digestion organ factor (beta=.78, t=2.54, p=.013) and pain/fatigue factor (beta=.86, t=0.43, p=.045). The total variance explained was 69.7%. CONCLUSION: These results showed that the factors affecting fatigue were physical symptoms, and the mood state of hospitalized women cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. The results of this study provided basic materials for a nursing intervention program to reduce fatigue.

5.Method and proficiency test for analysis of toxic metals in livestock products by ICP/MS.

The analytical method of trace toxic metals in livestock products was confirmed and validated through certified reference material (CRM) and the international proficiency tests. There are some difficulties to determine low levels of toxic metals in livestock products because of interferences due to the matrix. The recoveries of CRM (NIST 1577c) ranged from 73.9 to 119% for lead and from 86.4 to 111% for cadmium in bovine liver. The international proficiency tests were carried out with the milk powder and cocoa powder samples including metals provided by Food Analysis Performance Assessment Scheme (FAPAS(R), UK). The test samples were prepared by microwave digestion using solution of HNO3 : H2O2 : H2O (v/v/v = 5 : 2 : 4) and analyzed by ICP/MS. The analytical result of cadmium in milk powder was 121 microg/kg with -0.3 of the z-score compared to the assigned value of 131 microg/kg by FAPAS(R). The analytical results of lead and cadmium in cocoa powder were 29.2 microg/kg and 97.6 microg/kg, respectively, which satisfied the assigned values of 34.2 microg/kg for lead and 126 microg/kg for cadmium by FAPAS(R). It is verified that the analytical method is accurate and reliable to determine trace lead and cadmium in livestock products by microwave digestion and ICP/MS.

7.Theoretical Peptide Mass Distribution in the Non-Redundant Protein Database of the NCBI.

Peptide mass mapping is the matching of experimentally generated peptides masses with the predicted masses of digested proteins contained in a database. To identify proteins by matching their constituent fragment masses to the theoretical peptide masses generated from a protein database, the peptide mass fingerprinting technique is used for the protein identification. Thus, it is important to know the theoretical mass distribution of the database. However, few researches have reported the peptide mass distribution of a database. We analyzed the peptide mass distribution of non-redundant protein sequence database in the NCBI after digestion with 15 different types of enzymes. In order to characterize the peptide mass distribution with different digestion enzymes, a power law distribution (Zipfs law) was applied to the distribution. After constructing simulated digestion of a protein database, rank-frequency plot of peptide fragments was applied to generalize a Zipfs law curve for all enzymes. As a result, our data appear to fit Zipfs law with statistically significant parameter values.

8.Protective actions of acupoint magnetic medicated plaster therapy on hepatic function in the patient of cirrhosis after hepatitis.

OBJECTIVETo observe the therapeutic effect of acupoint magnetic medicated plaster therapy on cirrhosis after hepatitis.
METHODSOne hundred and twenty patients with cirrhosis after hepatitis were randomly divided into 2 groups. The control group (n=60) were treated by the hepatic protective therapy (diammonium glyeyrrhiznate, Silymarin, compound Tanshin, vitamin E), and the treatment group were treated by the liver-protective therapy and acupoint magnetic medicated plaster therapy, for 2-6 therapeutic courses. Clinical symptoms, hepatic function, serum markers of hepatitis B virus and indexes of hepatic fibrosis were investigated.
RESULTSThe markedly effective rate and the total effective rate were 65.0% and 95.0% in the treatment group, and 43.3% and 91.7% in the control group, and the serum indexes of hepatic fibrosis decreased signficantly, with significantly diferences (all P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONAcupoint magnetic medicated plaster therapy can improve clinical symptoms, rapidly restore hepatic function, decrease serum indexes of hepatic fibrosis in the patient of cirrhosis after hepatitis.

9.A Case of Clear Cell Syringoma in an Adult Male.

Clear cell syringoma has two distinct features from typical syringomas: histological predominance of clear cells and a correlation with diabetes mellitus. Otherwise it is similar to ordinary syringomas in age, sex, site, and clinical manifestations. We here report a 49-year-old male with clear cell syringoma accompanied with diabetes mellitus. Histological examination revealed numerous, variable-sized, well-defined tumor nests composed largely of clear cells that stained positive with PAS (Periodic Acid Schiff) before diastase digestion and negative after diastase digestion.

10.Species Identification of Enterococcus by Ribotyping.

BACKGROUND: Emerging drug resistance and increasing incidence of enterococci infection necessitates an accurate species identification. METHOD: We compared the identification of twelve strains of American Type Culture Coliection(ATCC) (E. faecalis, E. avium, E. faecium, E. raffinosus, E. durans, E. casseliflavus, E. hirae, E. flavescens, E. malodoratus, E. gallnarum, E. mundtii, and E. sulfureus) and 73 clinical isolates of enterococci(E. faecalis 8, E. faecium 8, E. avium 13, E. durans 5, and unidentified strains 39) by Vitek Gram-positive Identification card (version R08.1, bio- Merieux Vitek, Hazelwood, Mo., U.S.A.), ribotyping and conventional scheme of Facklam and Sahm. RESULTS: All ATCC strains could be identified on the basis of characteristic 16S-23S rDNA fingerprint patterns by using Eel I and Hind III. Of 39 strains unidentified by Vitek GPI card, 25 strains were identified as E. faecium, 5 strains were E. gallinarum, 5 strains were E. casseliflavus, 3 strains were E. avium and 1 strain was E. hirae. CONCLUSION: By ribotyping with Eel I and Hind m digestion, all twelve ATCC strains and 73 clinical strains were identified and it seems to be a reliable method for identification of Enterococcus species.
