Objective To observe the difference of morphology and phagocytosis between alveolar macrophages (AMs) and pulmonary interstitial macrophages (IMs). Methods AMs were collected by lung lavage and IMs by treatment of the lung tissue with DNAse and collagenase. The two cell populations were analyzed with respect to morphology by transmission electron microscopy, and the variation of these macrophages of phagocytosis were tested by malachite green colorimetry. Results There were great differences in morphology between AMs and IMs. The phagocytosis of AMs was much stronger than that of IMs. Conclusion There is functional and morphological heterogeneity between AMs and IMs. IMs should not be regarded as the precursors to AMs.

ObjectiveTo compare the incidence of C5 nerve palsy after laminoplasty and laminectomy with internal fixation for treating multilevel cervical spondylotic myelopathy (MCSM).MethodsFrom January 2005 to June 2010,68 patients with MCSM were treated with laminoplasty (27 patients, group A) or laminectomy with internal fixation(41 patients, group B).There were 21 males and 6 females in group A,aged 33-80 years(average,60.4 years),31 males and 10 females in group B,aged 22-77 years (average,58.7 years). All the patients were followed up for 12-48 months (average,22 months). In both groups,Cobb's method was applied to measure cervical lordotic angle, and Ishihara's method was conducted to measure cervical curvature index(CCI) before and after operation. The incidence of C5 nerve palsy was recorded and compared. Then we further compared preoperative and postoperative the cervical lordosis angle and CCI of 9 patients with C5 nerve palsy (group B1) and 32 patients without C5 nerve palsy (group B2) in group B.ResultsThe incidence of C5 nerve palsy in group A was 3.7%(1/27),while 22.0%(9/41) in group B (x2=4.32,P<0.05).For all ten patients with C5 nerve palsy, the muscle strengths of paralyzed muscles were recovered to grade 4 or better after being treated with conservative treatment for an average of 14 months. The change rate of preoperative and postoperative CCI in group B1 was 38.07%±18.03%,while 22.81%±12.71% in group B2.There was a statistical difference between group B1 and group B2 (t=2.88,P<0.05).Conclusion Compared with laminoplasty, laminectomy with internal fixation has a higher incidence of C5 nerve palsy. The C5 nerve palsy may be associated with postoperative increase of cervical lordosis angle. Moreover, tethering of the C5 root may be one of its important pathomechanisms.

Objective To study the association of the CAG repeat length polymorphism in exon 1 of the androgen receptor (AR) gene with metabolic syndrome (MS) and its components in men. Methods We used cluster sampling method to select 910 middle-and old-aged male subjects from the communities in Yinchuan and Wuzhong cities,Ningxia.Their body height, weight and blood pressure were measured;their testosterone (TT),serum lipids, fasting glucose (FBG) and fasting insulin (FINS) were assayed;and their body mass index (BMI) and free testosterone (FT) were calculated.Length of CAG repeats in exon 1 of the AR gene was determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and direct sequencing method. The subjects were divided into MS group (n =304) and normal control group (n=606) according to the diagnosis standards of MS.Results No obvious difference in the frequency distribution of CAG repeats in the AR gene was found between MS group and normal control group. The systolic blood pressure in the mcn with CAG repeat number of less than 22 was significantly higher than that in those with CAG repeat number of 22 or more, but HDL-C was significantly lower than men with CAG repeat number of 22 or more. However, the two groups did not significantly differ in diastolic blood pressure, other blood lipids level,FBG,FINS,BMI,TT or FT.The men with CAG repeat number of less than 22 had a higher prevalence of hypertension than those with CAG repeat number of 22 or more, but the prevalence of MS and other components of MS in the two groups had no significant difference,Conclusion The length of CAG repeats in exon 1 of the AR gene is related to the occurrence of hypertension and the dccreased level of HDL-C,but not to the incidence of MS.The number (less than 22) of CAG repeats of the AR gene may be a genetic factor of the occurrence of hypertension and reduced level of HDL-C.

OBJECTIVEThe aim of this survey was to obtain some information of the prevalence of dental caries in the youth aged 12, 15 and 18 years of Sichuan province.
METHODSBased on WHO and national oral health survey standards, dental caries prevalence and treatment needs were investigated randomly in selected young individuals of Sichuan province in 1995.
RESULTSThe prevalent rates of caries of 12-, 15-, and 18-year-old adolescents were 28.47% and 36.40% and 39.54% respectively. The mean DMFT of 12-, 15- and 18-year-old were 0.52, 0.81, and 0.99. There are more pit and fissure caries than smooth caries in the young of 12-year-old than those of 15- and 18-year-old.
CONCLUSIONDespite improvement can be seen in adolescents' oral health in Sichuan, there remains a proportion of active untreated decays. Some simple prevention programs are needed to stabilize the caries.

Objective: To explore the clinical features and prognosis in patients with Takayasu arteritis (TA) combining neurological symptoms. Methods: We retrospectively studied 274 TA patients combining neurological symptoms who admitted to our hospital from 2002-01 to 2013-10 for their clinical and imaging features with prognosis. Results: The ratio of male to female was 1:4.3 and the mean age of disease onset was at (28.2±11.2) years. The most common neurological symptom was dizziness (214/274 cases, 78.1%), most frequent type was type III TA (112 cases, 40.9%), most common affected artery was left subclavian artery (147 cases, 53.6%), and there were 77 cases (28.1%) with (3-4) branches of the aortic arch involvement. For stroke conditions, ischemic stroke was more frequently observed in patients with steno-occlusive lesions in subclavian artery and common carotid artery, while hemorrhagic stroke was more frequently found in patients with steno-occlusive lesions in descending aorta, abdominal aorta and/or renal artery. Heart failure was the most common cause of death, it was also the most common cardiovascular event in surviving cohorts. Conclusion: TA patients could have many neurological symptoms, which were related to the number and site of artery involvement.

Objective: To explore a single center large cohort of patients with Takayasu’s arteritis for their clinical manifestation and long-term outcome in China. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 566 patients with Takayasu’s arteritis admitted in our hospital from 2002-01 to 2013-11 for their clinical characteristics, laboratory ifndings, angiographic features, treatment and long-term outcomes. Results: The patient’s ratio for female to male gender was 1 to 3.8 and the average onset age was (28.9 ± 12.0) years. The most common non-speciifc symptom, initial symptom and complication were fever (52/566 patients, 9.2%), dizziness (214 patients, 37.8%) and hypertension (392 patients, 69.3%) respectively. The patients with pulmonary artery and coronary artery involvement were 83 (14.7%) and 66 (11.7%) respectively, and 131 (23.1%) patients had faster erythrocyte sedimentation rate. The major vascular damage was steno-occlusive lesion and the most common involvement was left sub-clavian artery, which was observed in 278 (49.1%) patients. The treatments were mainly included in medication, interventional therapy, autologous blood vessel transplantation, artiifcial blood vessel transplantation and aortic valve replacement. There were 32 patients died during the mean follow-up period of (5.0 ± 0.2) years. Hypertension, complication and the progressive stage of disease were the major factors affecting prognosis in relevant patients (regression coefifcients: 4.664, 1.959 and 1.870 respectively, allP<0.05). Conclusion: Hypertension was the leading reason for patients’ hospital visit. Takayasu’s arteritis was closely related to cardiovascular disease, the early diagnosis and treatment were really important in clinical practice.
