Aim To evaluate the pharmacological effects of sodi um ferulate on asthmatic guinea pigs. Methods Guinea pigs were sensit ized by ovalbumin. Two weeks later, ment of Sodium ferulate were injected every d ay five minutes before inhale, the guinea pigs were killed 7 days later. Granul ocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), interleukin-4 (IL-4), interleukin-5(IL-5), Eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) in serum were measured by Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) and fluoroimmunoassay method, the e osinophils (EOSs) were counted and the phosphodiesterase (PDE) in the bronchoalv eolar lavage fluid(BALF) were determined by inverse high-performance liquid chr omatography (HPLC) method. Result After treatment with sodium f erulate for one week at the dose of 25,50,100 mg?kg -1 respectively, th e GM-CSF, IL-4, IL-5 contents were inhibited as compared with the untreated g roup in a dose dependent manner. The count of eosinophil was decreased. The activi ty of PDE of cell in BALF and the level of ECP were decreased. Conclusion Sodium ferulate attenuates the GM-CSF, IL-4, IL-5 in serum and eosi nophils and the activity of PDE and ECP and has protective effect in asthmatic g uinea pig.

Objective:To modify the pulsatile bioreactor we constructed previously for simulating the high-flow, high-pressure hemodynamics of heart valve in vivo, and to experimentally cultivate the tissue-engineered heart valves (TEHV) in the modified bioreactor. Methods: T-PLS system (NewheartBio Co., Ltd Korea) was used to generate pulsatile flow in the modified bioreactor and we designed a new air-exchange pathway to avoid contamination. The TEHV were made by seeding human bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) on de-cellularized porcine heart valve. After cultured under static condition for 4 d, the TEHVs were moved to the modified bioreactor and exposed to low-flow (0-600 ml/min) or high-flow(0-4 800 ml/min) pulsatile hydrodynamics for 7d, then the cells on TEHVs were evaluated. Results: After modification, the flow range expanded from (0-1 200) ml/min to (0-6 000) ml/min and the pressure range expanded from (0-40) mmHg to (0-180) mmHg. In culture experiments, 26.3% of the seeded cells remained under low-flow environment and cells were completely lost under the high-flow dynamics. Conclusion: The modified bioreactor can basically simulate the dynamics of heart valve in vivo and can be used in TEHV cultivation research. However, the current TEHV can not tolerate the high-flow pulsatile hydrodynamics.

Objective To discuss causation and clinical treatment of complication in anterior decompression and fixation technique (ADFT) for thoracolumbar fractures with associated paraplegia. Methods A total of 204 cases that had thoracolumbar fractures with paraplegia were operated with ADFT from 1998 to 2004. Of all, 51 times (34 cases) of complication took place. Change of Cob angle was measured according to X-film of thoracolumbar spine before and after operation. Meanwhile, sensation and motion of patients was evaluated. Results There was incision infection leading to septic cerebo-meningtis in one case, CSF leakage in seven, pneumothorax in eight, rib nerve-root injure in five, lumbar nerve-root injure in two, genitofemoral nerve injure in three, lateral femoral cutaneous nerve injure in two, kyphosis in three, deep venous thrombosis in three and eight times of skin-temperature change. X-film that was taken after operation for all patients showed scolisis in five cases. A follow up for 3-6 years (average 2.5 years) was performed in 84 cases, of which seven cases had chronic low-back pain, six scolisis and five kyphosis. No patient showed complications such as screw breakage, plate breakage, fixation device loosening and pseudo-articulation in thoracolumbar spine. Conclusions Many complications can be avoided if we master well anterior decompression and fixation technique of thoracolumbar fracture, reduce surgical trauma and give appropriate and rational guide for rehabilitation.

Medical Journal of Chinese People's Liberation Army 1982;0(03):-
A revolving drum, about 40cm in diameter, with vertical stripes on its surface, was used in examination. The drum was held 50cm in front of the eyes of aircrew receiving examination. The horizontal optokinetic nystagmus was elicited by vertical black stripes moving horizontally. The examinee was instructed to gaze straight ahead at the black stripes, without deliberate fixation. The drum speed was kept constant at 20?, 40?,60?,80?,100?,120?/s. The velocity of the slow component of nystagmus, its frequency, amplitude and symmetry were recorded when the reaction reached its peak. The slow component velocity and the frequency were increased with the drum speed, but the amplitude was decreased with the drum speed. The wave forms of optokinetic nystagmus were usually of five types.
