AIM To study the protective effect of total salvianolic acid against cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury. METHODS The cerebral ischemia reperfusion model in mice was made by means of ligating bilateral common carotid arteries in mice. After reperfusion, latency, error number of step down test and the gasping time after cutting head in ischemia reperfusion mice were recorded. Spectrophotometric assay were used to measure the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), the contents malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH) in brain of experimental mice brain homogenate. RESULTS In step down test, the ischemia reperfusion impaired the function of learning and memory in mice. The total salvianolic acid markedly improved the function of learning and memory, reduced the error number and extended the latency in ischemia reperfusion mice. The total salvianolic acid also significantly inhibited the changes of SOD, MDA and GSH in the cerebrum induced by ischemia reperfusion. CONCLUSION The total salvianolic acid has protective effect against cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury via its antioxidant activity.

Objective To calculate the volume and to study the correlated risk factors of hidden blood loss after artificial hip or knee joint replacement. Methods From July to November in 2008, 38patients with age of (65.11±13.51) years old were treated with artificial hip or knee joint replacement, and were divided by age into four groups. Using Gross formula, total blood loss was calculated depending on height, weight and pre- and post-operation hematocrit, and the hidden blood loss was acquired by subtracting the visible blood loss from the total blood loss. The correlation between age, body mass index( BMI),gender and hidden blood blood loss was observed. Differences of hidden blood loss of artificial hip or knee joint replacement were compared. Results The total blood loss of all arthroplasties was ( 1563.52 ± 693.10) ml,and the hidden blood loss was (538.70 ± 529.77) ml,the percentage of hidden blood loss was 33%. The hidden blood loss was inversely related to age (P< 0.05 ). There was no correlation between BMI and hidden blood loss (P>0.05). The percentage of hidden blood loss in total blood loss in woman was significantly higher than that in man. With age and gender paired, the percentage of hidden blood loss in total blood loss in artificial hip joint replacement was significantly higher than that in artificial knee joint replacement (P<0.05 ). Conclusions Both of age and gender are risk factors influencing hidden blood loss after artificial hip or knee joint replacement. And compared with artificial knee joint replacement, the percentage of hidden blood loss in artificial hip joint replacement is higher.

Objective To evaluate the effect of progesterone (PROG) on promoting peripheral nerve collateral growth and nerve regeneration after terminolateral neurorrhaphy (TLN). Methods Thirty-six female SD rats were from nine to ten weeks old and weighed from 250 to 270 grams. They were randomly divided into two groups by different drugs they were administrated, the PROG group and the control group. Both groups were subdivide into three groups respectively, PROG four weeks group, PROG eight weeks group, PROG twelve weeks group, control four weeks group, control eight weeks group and control twelve weeks group. There were six subjects in every subgroups. First, both groups were performed ovariectomy. Then, two weeks later, TLN was operated. In the PROG group, the left peroneal nerve was transected, then an 1mm epineukral window was created on the neighbouring. The distal end of peroneal nerve was sutured to the windowed tibial nerve by means of end-to-side attachment. In the control group, nerve TLN was performed as in the PROG group, 0.2ml (10mg/ml) PROG and tea-oil (the solvent of PROG) was injected by subcutaneous injection for days in PROG group and control group respectively. Electrophysiological, histolgicial and morphological examinations were measured at 4,8, and 12 weeks after the operation. Results Regeneration of peroneal nerve occurred in both groups. All the data were analysed by factorial designed analysis of variance. The output demonstrated that there was a signficant difference in the quality of regeneration of peroneal between PROG group and control group (P

Objective To establish an efficiency calibration method without a radioactive source for Inspector 2000 gamma spectroscopy system. Methods At the fwst step, geometry parameters of the detector were properly specified by comparisons of FEPE(Full Energy Peak Efficiency)between Monte Carlo(MC)calculations and the average measured values of HPGe and NaI detectors using point sources(137 Cs).The differences between calculations and measurements were generally within ±10% for gamma rays. Then,Monte Carlo simulation was used to evaluate the counting efficiency of Nal(TI)and HPGe detectors for BOMAB phantoms.Corresponding efficiency curves and functions were fitted. Results The counting efficiency received from the fitted efficiency functions had a good agreement with those from MC simulation. The bias for Nal detector ranged from-19% to 18%,while the bias for HPGe detector ranged from-11% to 17%.The above errors were totally acceptable in the on-site deployment during nuclear and radiological emergency events. Conclusions Monte Carlo method is simple, time and laborsaving in determing the counting efficiency of gamma spectroscopy system.

Objective To study the influence of the surgical glue on anastomosis scar formation after bilioenterostomy Methods Seventy-two hybrid canines were randomly assigned into group A (OB glue plus persistent T tube stent ), group B (OB glue plus T tube drawn out at different postoperative time), group C ( FG plus persistent T tube stent ) and group D (FG plus T tube drawn out at different postoperative time). The surgical glue (OB glue or FG) was used instead of silk thread in biliointestinal Roux-en-Y anastomosis, and T tube was placed as indwelling stent. The collagen content (BCC) of anastomotic specimen was measured in 3 weeks and 3 , 6 , 9 ,12 months after the operation. Results Three months after the operation, BCC in group B was significantly higher than that in group A (P0.05). Conclusions The surgical glue can promote anastomosis healing with less scar formation, and accelerate scar softening and maturation, which suggests that surgical glue should be effective in the prevention of anastomotic stricture.

BACKGROUND: Secretion of various neurotrophic factors by Schwann cells plays important roles in neural regeneration. However, the secretion capability is affected by many factors. To seek a feasible method for promoting nerve growth factor secretion by Schwann cells is a key of regeneraion following neurologic defect.OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects of methylprednisolone(solu-medrol) on the secreted function of Schwann cells of cultured rats.METHODS: Schwann cells were isolated and cultured by enzyme digestion method. Cell growth was observed under an inverted phase contrast microscope. Following passage, purity of some Schwann cells was identified using S-100 protein immunity. Other Schwann cells were regulated using cell counting plate into 1×10~9/L, and incubated in a 6-well culture plate (15 wells) for further incubation. Following 4 days of culture, different concentrations of solu-medrol (10~(-3), 10~(-4), 10~(-6), 10~(-8) mol/L) were administrated to the cell, while blank control group (1 well) was given no drug. 24, 48 and 72 hours after administration, reverse trancription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used in the detection of the levels of nerve growth factor mRNA.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Number of primarily cultured cells was significantly increased at day 7, and 80% cells were confluent. Subcultured cells were spindle-shaped, with 2 thin long processes, showing positive fluorescence staining. Fibroblasts were round or flat, showing negative reaction of fluorescence staining. Reserve transcription-polymerase chain reaction demonstrated that nerve growth factor number at 72 hours affected by 10~(-8) mol/L radiosone was increased compared with the blank control group and other concentrations and other time points (P < 0.05). Number of nerve growth factor was reduced following treatment of 10~(-3) mol/L radiosone compared with the blank control group and other concentrations (P < 0.05). These results suggested that high concentration of solu-medrol prohibits secreted function of Schwann's cells, but long time and low dosage solu-medrol promotes secreted function of Schwann's cells.
