1.Endothelial function and platelet activation in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation and the influence of beta-blocker on them
Chinese Journal of Geriatrics 2011;30(3):184-187
Objective To examine the serum von Willebrand factor (vWF) and soluble Pselectin levels in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF), and to observe the influence of beta-blocker treatment on endothelial function and platelet activation in NVAF patients. Methods The 25 subjects, 17 males and 8 females, with persistent NVAF and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF)≥50%, were enrolled in NVAF group. Those with myocardial infarction, cardiomyopathy or hyperthyroidism were excluded. Another 35 subjects with sinus rhythm were as control (age, gender and LVEF matched with NVAF group, and with similar cardiovascular diseases). Serum vWF and soluble P-selectin levels were tested by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results The serum vWF level was significantly higher in NVAF group than in control group [(1945.2±111.3) g/L vs. (1862.3±101.6) g/L, P<0.05]. However, there was no significant difference in serum soluble P-selectin level between NVAF group and control group [(24.32±9.21) g/L vs. (24.68±11.70) g/L, P>0. 05]. After administration of beta-blocker, a down-regulation was found in serum vWF level [(1758. 3±152. 4) g/L, P<0. 01], but not in soluble P-selectin level [(21.05±8. 94) g/L, P>0. 05]. There was no relationship between serum level of vWF and soluble P-selectin (r=-0.008,P>0. 05). Conclusions High serum level of vWF is found in patients with persistent NVAF as compared with control, indicating endothelial damage/dysfunction in those patients. After administration of beta-blocker, serum level of vWF drops dramatically in NVAF patients, indicating possible endothelial function protection of beta-blocker.

Objective To study the clinical application of laparoscopy in the treatment of closed abdominal trauma. Methods Emergent laparoscopic exploration and treatment was conducted in 21 patients with closed abdominal trauma, who had stable hemodynamic parameters, from July 2000 to December 2003. Results Diagnosis was clarified laparoscopically in all the 21 patients. There were 4 cases of open liver repair, 2 cases of laparoscopic liver repair, 5 cases of open splenectomy, 3 cases of hand-assisted laparoscopic splenectomy, 2 cases of video-assisted small incisional intestinal repair, 4 cases of partial intestinal resection and 1 case of laparoscopic greater omentum hemostasis. Conclusions Laparoscopy in the diagnosis and treatment of closed abdominal trauma is accurate, safe and effective.

Chinese Journal of Digestion 2001;0(04):-
Objective Effects of hepatocellular carcinoma of antisense insulin like growth factor Ⅱ (antisense IGF Ⅱ) combined with muramyl dipeptide (MDP) was studied. Methods A cDNA fragment of human IGF Ⅱ was synthesized and inserted into a eukaryotic expression vector of pcDNA 3 (antisense IGF Ⅱ ). Antisense IGF Ⅱ and MDP encapsulated with liposomes were introduced into HepG 2 human hepatocellular carcinoma cells and were injected into subcutaneous tumors generated in nude mice. The growth of HepG 2 cells transfected with antisense IGF Ⅱ and MDP, and the subcutaneous tumors injected with antisense IGF Ⅱ and MDP were observed. Results The growth of HepG 2 cells was blocked completely, and the subcutaneous tumors disappeared in two of five nude mice. Conclusions The combination therapy of antisense IGF Ⅱ and MDP is effective in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Bacterial translocation and endotoximia occurs in consequence of increased intestinal permeability after trauma. Glutamine can decrease intestinal permeability and improve the intestina mucosal barrier.

Objective To explore the effect of low calorie metabolism on the survival of HeLa cells exposed to X-rays,and the influence of starvation on the antioxidative factors in the blood of rats after irradiation. Methods MTT method was used to evaluate the impact of different concentration glucose on the proliferation of HeLa cells.Colony formation assay was employed to detect the influence of glucose ( 1,5,10 and 25 mmol/L) on radiosensitivity of HeLa cells. Flow cytometry assay was used to analyze distribution of cell cycle and apoptosis.60 male SD rats were randomly divided into 6 groups with 10 rats each.Rats in every two groups were fed ad libitum, fasted for 24 h and fasted for 48 h,respectively.Rats in one group of each approach were respectively exposed to whole-body X-rays at 11 Gy. At 2 h after irradiation, all of rats were sacrificed and their venous blood was collected.Elisa kits were used to detect superoxide dismutase (SOD) and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC).Results An increased viability was observed in HeLa cells treated with the glucose at low concentration ( <25 mmol/L),while HeLa cell growth was inhibited by glucose at doses of >25 mmol/L. Relevant to cells treated with 1 mmoL/L glucose,SERs (sensitive enhancement ratio) in cells exposed to 5,10 and 25 mmol/L glucose were 1.07,1.10 and 1.23,respectively. A reduction of G2/M and S arrests and apeptosis caused by 6 Gy X-ray irradiation were observed [(49.68 ±1.88)% and (35.54±1.45)% at G2/M phase,(16.88 ±1.22)% and (10.23 ±1.65)% atS phase,t=10.42,5.61,P<0.05]and in the cells treated with 1 mmol/L glucose compared with cells treated with 25 mmol/L glucose [ ( 25.50 ± 0.95 ) % and (7.56 ± 1.07 ) %,t =21.72,P <0.05 ].Without irradiation, calorie restriction exhibited a negligible influence on SOD and T-AOC in rats. However, after 11 Gy irradiation, compared with rats fed ad libitum, the levels of SOD and T-AOC were significantly increased in rats with calorie restriction ( t =40.32,42.78, P < 0.05 ).Conclusions Calorie restriction has a certain radioprotective effect in vivo and in vitro.

Objective: To identify the general public’s perceptions of the overall risk communication strategy carried out by Chinese public health agencies during the first wave of avian influenza A(H7N9) outbreak in humans in 2013.
Methods: Participants were recruited from communities in Beijing, Lanzhou and Hangzhou, China in May and June 2013 by convenience sampling. Demographics and other relevant information were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. Focus group interviews were conducted using a set of nine pre-developed questions and a tested moderator guide. The interviews were audio recorded and were transcribed verbatim. The constant comparative method was used to identify trends and themes.
Results: A total of nine focus group interviews, with 94 participants recruited from nine communities, were conducted. Most participants received H7N9 information via television and the Internet. A majority of the participants appreciated the transparency and timeliness of the information released by the government. They expressed a sense of trust in the recommended public health advice and followed most of them. The participants suggested that the government release more information about clinical treatment outcomes, have more specific health recommendations that are practical to their settings and expand the use of new media channels for risk communication.
Conclusion: The public perceived the overall risk communication strategy by the Chinese public health agencies as effective, though the moderator had a governmental agency title that might have biased the results. There is a need to expand the use of social media for risk communication in the future.
