The study of physical strength of 435 young men aged 18-19 preparing to join military service in Can Tho province. The year 2002 will all medical elements such as the height, chest measurement, the body weight and health conditions, showed that in comparing with 19 years old, the heigh, body weight and chest mean measurement of 18 years old men were similar. Health classification showed that in 18 years old men the grade 1st, 2nd and 3rd account for 74% and in 19 years old, 66% respectively. OBJECTIVETo investigate the effect of temperature on the partition coefficient of isoflurane and sevoflurane in perflurocarbonate emulsion (Oxygent(TM)).

METHODSThe partition coefficients of isoflurane and sevoflurane in perflurocarbonate emulsion (Oxygent(TM)) were measured at different temperatures (4, 22, 27, 32 and 37 degrees celsius;) using syringe-flask double headspace equilibration technique with gas chromatography, and the relationship between the partition coefficients and the temperature was analyzed.

RESULTSAt 4, 22, 27, 32 and 37 degrees celsius;, the partition coefficients of isoflurane in Oxygent(TM) were 85.30∓5.60, 40.48∓1.09, 37.14∓3.64, 27.38∓2.28 and 24.66∓1.03, and those of sevoflurane were 91.54∓5.40, 42.50∓0.91, 37.21∓2.76, 25.43∓1.03 and 28.05∓1.74, respectively. The partition coefficients of sevoflurane at 4, 22 and 37 degrees celsius; were significantly higher than those of isoflurane (P<0.05). The regression equations between the partition coefficient and temperature for isoflurane and sevoflurane were Y=-1.893X+89.20 (R(2)=0.942) and Y=-2.075X+95.58 (R(2)=0.951), respectively. An inverse linear relationship was found between temperature and the partition coefficient.

CONCLUSIONWithin a specified range of temperatures, the partition coefficients isoflurane and sevoflurane decrease as the temperature increases. Sevoflurane shows a high solubility in Oxygent(TM) as compared to isoflurane.

Is it necessary to open the course "general chemistry" to help freshperson to complete courses of organic chemistry and physical chemistry in the preliminary course of College of Medicine, Hallym University? As a basic step to answer this question, the records of the organic chemistry and physical chemistry were compared according to "chemistry" selection at the College Scholastic Ability Test in the freshperson of College of Medicine, Hallym University in the year 2000. There was a significant difference of the records of organic chemistry between chemistry selecting group and chemistry non-selecting group that selected physics, biology and earth science. There was a no significant difference between chemistry selecting female and non-selecting female, although there was a significant difference between chemistry selecting male and non-selecting female. As for physical chemistry, the records of selecting chemistry group were higher than those of the non-selecting group. There was a significant difference between non-chemistry selecting male and chemistry selecting male and female while a no significant difference between non-chemistry selecting male and non-chemistry selecting female. However, records of non-chemistry selecting female showed no significant difference with chemistry selecting male and female. This result means that difference of records is not dependent on the chemistry selecting but dependent on the sexual difference. Therefore, the opening of "general chemistry" as preliminary course for organic chemistry and physical chemistry cannot be essential. The attitude on the learning and incentive might be more important factors for the completion of the courses of organic chemistry and physical chemistry.

The properties of biomedical intelligent polymer materials can be changed obviously when there is a little physical or chemical change in external condition. They are in the forms of solids, solutions and polymers on the surface of carrier, including aqueous solution of hydrophilic polymers, cross-linking hydrophilic polymers (i.e. hydrogels) and the polymers on the surface of carrier. In this paper are reviewed the progress in researches and the application of biomedical intelligent polymer materials.

This study aimed to evaluate the rheological characteristic of W/O microemulsion. Using the Low Shear-30 Sinus Rheometer, we assessed the effects of water percentage in microemulsion on the apparent viscosity of microemulsion at different shear rates and temperature, and on the viscoelasticity of microemulsion. The results demonstrated that with the increase of water, the apparent viscosities at four different shear rates increased exponentially. The fitted curve between water percentage and the apparent viscosity (eta) at low shear rate was steeper than the others. We found that viscous component (eta') and elastic component (eta") also increased exponentially when water percentage was increasing. This communication addressed the relationship between water percentage and eta, and discussed the physical meaning of the elastic component. The results suggest that both the viscous component and the elastic component present qualitatively physical nature, but the viscous component is more accurate than the other.

AIMTo observe possible mechanism that endurance training can enhance anti-fatigue capability, and that blood redistribution by analyzing some biochemical indexes of endurance-trained mice after exhaustive exercise.

METHODSThe model was set up by exhaustive exercise. The indexes include the activity of SOD, CAT and POD and the MDA content in serum and the NO content in liver, muscle, heart and serum.

RESULTSAfter exhaustive exercise, the SOD activity in serum and the NO content in liver significantly decrease (P < 0.05 - 0.01), and the activity of POD and CAT, the NO content in serum and muscle significantly increase (P < 0.05 - 0.01), but the rest insignificantly change in non-endurance (P > 0.05). In endurance group, the CAT activity in serum are significantly higher than in non-endurance (P < 0.05), and the NO content in serum is significantly lower than in non-endurance (P < 0.01), but the rest are insignificantly different between two groups (P > 0.05). After 24h restoration, in non-endurance group, the CAT activity and the MDA content in serum and the NO content in liver significantly rise (P < 0.05-0.01), and the NO content in muscle and serum significantly decrease (P < 0.05), but the rest insignificantly change (P > 0.05). In endurance group, the SOD activity in serum and the NO content in liver, serum and heart significantly rise (P < 0.05), and the CAT activity in serum significantly decreases (P < 0.05), but the rest insignificantly change (P > 0.05). In endurance group, the CAT activity and the MDA content in serum are significantly lower than in non-endurance (P < 0.05), but the NO content in heart is higher than in non-endurance (P < 0.05). The rest are insignificantly different between two groups (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSIONThe possible mechanism, which endurance training can enhance anti-fatigue capability, is relative to enhance the capability to resume balance. Blood redistribution are possibly relative to change to the NO content.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy and the safety of etoricoxib 90 mg daily administered to Korean patients for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis over a 12-week period. METHODS: Eighty-nine patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis were administered Etoricoxib 90 mg for 12 weeks. Tender Joint Count (total 68 joints), Swollen Joint Count (total 66 joints), Patient Global Assessment of Disease Activity, and Investigator Global Assessment of Disease Activity were assessed as primary endpoints. Patient Global Assessment of Pain, Health Assessment of Questionnaire (HAQ: disability scales), Patient Global Assessment of Response to Therapy, Investigator Global Assessment of Response to Therapy, and Duration of Morning Stiffness were assessed as secondary endpoints. Those endpoints were assessed at week 2, 4, 8, and 12. Safety was evaluated by physical examination, serum chemistry, blood count, urinalysis, and occurrence of adverse events. RESULTS: Etoricoxib 90 mg showed significant effects compared to baseline, thus the result indicated etoricoxib was clinically effective. Etoricoxib 90 mg showed significant improvement in all efficacy endpoints (primary endpoints and secondary endpoints). Treatment effects for etoricoxib 90 mg were approximately a 7.3 (95% CI 5.8 8.9, p<0.0001) joint reduction in the number of tender joints, 4.8 (95% CI 3.6 6.0, p<0.0001) joint reduction in the number of swollen joints, a 15.4 (95% CI 12.1 18.7, p<0.0001) mm improvement in the patient global assessment (100 mm VAS) and 1.3 (95% CI 1.1 1.6, p<0.0001) unit improvement in the investigator global assessment (0 to 4 Likert scale). Treatment effects were observed at the earliest time point of measurement and were maintained over time during the 12-week period. Drug-related clinical adverse events were reported by 22 (24.7%) of 89 safety evaluable subjects. Eight patients discontinued the drug due to clinical adverse events. Frequency of drug-related laboratory abnormalities was low with 2 (2.2%). Nobody discontinued due to laboratory abnormalities. CONCLUSION: (1) Etoricoxib 90 mg once daily was clinically effective for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in Korea patients. (2) Etoricoxib 90 mg once daily administered to patients with rheumatoid arthritis was generally safe and well tolerated.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the urodynamic findings in diabetics complaining of urinary voiding symptoms, the retrospective study was performed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For 5 years, from Jan. 1992 to Dec. 1997, urodynamic findings on 76 diabetics(49 males and 27 females) with voiding dysfunction were assessed and classified into; 1, detrusor instability, 2, impaired detrusor contractility, 3, detrusor areflexia, 4, indeterminate, 5, normal. Diabetic patients who had diseases of influential potentiality on bladder function were excluded out. A detailed history of diabetes, past and present medical history were reviewed. In addition, a thorough voiding history, urine culture, blood chemistry and physical examination were determinate. Ophthalmic examination by ophthalmologist and sacral reflex arc examination by urologist were also examined. Those with abnormal sacral reflex arc(absent bulbocavernous reflex, lax anal sphincter tone and control) were deemed sacral cord signs positive, and those with intact sacral reflexes were deemed sacral cord signs negative. RESULTS: The urodynamic findings of 76 diabetic patients were distributed into 25(32.9%) detrusor instability 23(30.3%) impaired detrusor contractility, 21 (27.8%) detrusor areflexia, 6(7.9%) indeterminate and 1 (1.3%) normal. Thirty six(47.4%) of them had retinopathy and 27(35.5%) had positive sacral cord sign, those complications took place most frequently in diabetics with detrusor areflexia. CONCLUSIONS: Diabetic cystopathy revealed various patterns of bladder dysfunction, and detrusor areflexia patients showed high incidence of retinopathy and positive sacral cord sign. It is necessary that urodynamic studies should be done in diabetic cystopathy to characterize the treatment of voiding dysfunction.

Hypoxia is a serious aviation problem and will be a source of dangerous aerospace accidents. Hypoxia tolerance has been evaluated by the time of useful consciousness (TUC), subjective symptoms, hypoxic ventilatory responses (HVR), and cardiovascular changes. It is not clear which physiological factors relate to the former parameters and only few studies are occurred in Korea. From 15 May 1998 through 17 September 1999, 929 ROKAF pilots are checked CBC, blood chemistry, health-related physical fitness tests, pulmonary function tests, life-style, and we analyzed the variables showing significant correlation with TUC. Age, total flying time, grade, and smoking duration had negative correlation with TUC. BMI, FVC, TV, and flexibility had positive correlation. But the reasons why fighter pilots showed significantly shorter TUC than transporter pilots are needed more following study. Also further studies must be made on the intervention study for hypoxia tolerance promotion of ROKAF pilots
