At present, the treatment of sepsis depends largely on non-specific methods, highlighting an urgent need for novel therapeutic strategies. Stem cells have garnered significant attention in the treatment of various diseases due to their unique biological properties. Stem cells enhance sepsis survival through mechanisms such as reducing bacterial burden, modulating inflammation, and ameliorating organ dysfunction. Recent studies have shown that stem cells can increase the survival rate of sepsis patients through multiple pathways such as reducing the bacterial load of the host, regulating inflammatory homeostasis, and improving multi-organ dysfunction. Their derivatives, exosomes, can also alleviate the imbalanced immune response in sepsis patients. Recent advances in stem cell-based therapies for sepsis were summarized in this paper.
2.Application progress of the prototype willingness model in adolescent risk behaviors
Chinese Journal of School Health 2026;47(2):296-299
The prototype willingness model (PWM), a dual process model consisting of a rational pathway and a social reactive pathway, offers a more comprehensive and appropriate theoretical framework for understanding adolescent risk behaviors. To elucidate the formation mechanisms of three key adolescent risk behaviors (alcohol drinking, smoking, and social media risk disclosure behaviors), the paper systematically reviews the application process of the PWM in these three major adolescent risk behaviors and compares the similarities and differences in its core variables and underlying mechanisms across different behavior types. The paper contributes to a deeper understanding of the causes of typical adolescent risk behaviors and offers theoretical and empirical support for the development of targeted intervention strategies.

OBJECTIVE To preliminarily investigate the antiasthmatic effect and mechanism of Ephedrae Herba-Armeniacae Semen Amarum herb pair on the respiratory center. METHODS Male SD rats were randomly divided into blank group, model group, dexamethasone group (positive control), and Ephedrae Herba-Armeniacae Semen Amarum 2∶1, 1∶1 and 1∶2 groups. Rats in each group were administered different ratios of the herb pair decoction [all at 18 g (crude drug)/kg], dexamethasone suspension (0.5 mg/kg), or normal saline intragastrically twice daily for seven consecutive days. Forty minutes after the last administration, medicated cerebrospinal fluid was collected to determine the content of effective components entering the brain. One and a half hours after the last administration, the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) was located using a stereotaxic apparatus. Histamine phosphate (1 μL) was injected into the NTS region at a constant rate of 1 μL/min using a 10 μL microsyringe to induce excitation of the respiratory center in rats; the blank group was injected with normal saline. The contents of neurotransmitters [nerve growth factor (NGF), substance P (SP), norepinephrine (NA), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and acetylcholine (Ach)] in the medulla oblongata brain tissue were detected. The mRNA expressions of neurokinin-1 receptor (NK-1R), p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and c-fos in the medulla oblongata, as well as the protein expressions of NK-1R, p38 MAPK, and c-fos in the NTS region, were determined. RESULTS The main active components of Ephedrae Herba-Armeniacae Semen Amarum herb pair entering the brain were ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, and methylephedrine. Compared with blank group, the contents of NGF, SP, NA, 5-HT and Ach, and the relative expression levels of NK-1R, p38 MAPK, and c-fos mRNA and protein were significantly increased in the model group ( P <0.01). Compared with model group, Ephedrae Herba-Armeniacae Semen Amarum herb pair groups with different ratios significantly reduced the neurotransmitter contents and the relative expression levels of NK-1R, p38 MAPK, and c-fos mRNA and protein ( P <0.01), with the 2∶1 Ephedrae Herba-Armeniacae Semen Amarum herb pair and 1∶1 mass ratios showing relatively better effects. CONCLUSIONS Ephedrae Herba alkaloids are the main active components in affecting the function of the respiratory center. The herb pair groups with a larger proportion of Ephedrae Herba exhibit stronger effects. Ephedrae Herba-Armeniacae Semen Amarum herb pair can reduce the excitability of the respiratory center by down-regulating the expression of the NK-1R/MAPK/c-fos pathway in the NTS and decreasing the abnormal release of neurotransmitters such as NGF and SP.

Objective:
To investigate the relationship of metabolic score for insulin resistance (METS-IR) with bone mineral content (BMC) and bone metabolic markers levels among adolescents, so as to provide a scientific foundation for the early identification and prevention of bone related diseases.
Methods:
From 2017 to 2019 and 2023, a total of 1 414 adolescents aged 12-18 years from Yinchuan were selected using a method combining convenient sampling with stratified cluster random sampling. The data of basic information, body mass index, BMC, serum osteocalcin (OC), type I collagen cross linked C-terminal peptide (CTX) and calcium (Ca), METS-IR among adolescents were obtained by questionnaire survey, physical measurement and laboratory examination, and METS-IR was divided into four groups Q1-Q 4 according to P 25 , P 50 and P 75 . Logistic regression models combined with restricted cubic splines were employed to analyze the relationship between METS-IR and low BMC as well as low bone metabolic markers. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate METS-IR effectiveness in diagnosing low BMC.
Results:
The levels of BMC, OC, CTX, Ca and METS-IR in the surveyed adolescents were (2.66±0.52)kg, (20.49±13.77) ng/mL , (2 460.89±1 818.96)pg/mL, (2.47±0.67)mmol/L, 30.63±7.58. After adjusting for gender, age and physical activity level, METS-IR in Q 4 group had a reduced risk of low BMC and low CTX [ OR (95% CI )=0.03(0.01-0.07), 0.45(0.32-0.65)] and an elevated risk of low OC [ OR (95%CI )=1.85(1.28-2.67)], compared with the Q 1 group (all P <0.05). Gender stratified analyses revealed similar trends for both males and females (all P <0.05). Non linear dose response relationships were observed between METS-IR and low BMC ( P total trend <0.01, P non linearity =0.01), as well as low OC ( P total trend <0.01, P non linearity =0.01), while a linear relationship was detected with low CTX ( P total trend <0.01, P non linearity =0.72). ROC curves revealed that METS-IR had the best diagnostic performance for low BMC (AUC=0.85, 95% CI=0.82-0.88, P <0.01).
Conclusions
Higher METS-IR score is linked to reduced risk of low BMC and CTX but increase risk of low OC among adolescents. These findings suggest METS-IR is a reliable indicator for assessing BMC and early predicting bone health risk among adolescents.

Objective:To investigate the relationship between dynamic alterations in serum albumin (ALB) concentrations and clinical outcomes in hospitalized surgical patients, thus providing a basis for optimizing clinical management strategies. Methods:This study utilized data from a prospective observational cohort study on nutritional status among 7 122 elderly hospitalized patients across 34 tertiary hospitals in 18 Chinese cities. A total of 1 714 surgical patients hospitalized for 7-30 days with complete data were included. Standardized protocols were used to collect demographic data, clinical outcomes, and a range of laboratory results, including nutritional and hematological parameters. Heterogeneous effects of ALB on clinical outcomes were explored. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to determine cutoff values for infection-related complications. Correlation analyses and multiple linear regression models were used to identify independent predictors of the absolute change in ALB (?ALB).Results:Among the surgical patients, 69.7% (1 195/1 714) experienced a decline in ALB levels during their hospital stay, which was significantly associated with the occurrence of both infection- and non-infection-related complications. Simultaneously, a marked decrease in ALB was also significantly correlated with changes in nutritional and inflammatory status during hospitalization, worsening of gastrointestinal symptoms at discharge, and functional activity abnormalities (all P<0.05). ?ALB exhibited a close association with outcome variables such as infection-related complications. Based on the incidence of infection-related complications, a cutoff value for ALB was calculated, dividing patients into a high-risk group ( n=179) and a low-risk group ( n=1 535), and a statistically significant difference in the incidence of infection-related complications was found between these two groups ( P<0.05). Correlation analysis and multiple linear regression modeling revealed that female gender, a higher baseline ALB level, a poorer baseline inflammatory status, an exacerbation of inflammatory status, larger alterations in platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, and the presence of infection-related complications were predictive factors for a decline in ALB levels among surgical patients during their hospital stay. Conclusions:?ALB serves as a critical indicator of the inflammatory-nutritional interplay, with its magnitude of decline effectively predicting clinical outcomes and nutritional status changes and guiding multidisciplinary interventions in surgical patients.
