1.In vitro antiplasmodial activity, macronutrients and trace metals in the medicinal plants: Phyllanthus spp. and Alpinia conchigera Griff

An antiplasmodial screening of Phyllanthus debilis and Phyllanthus urinaria was
carried out. The medicinal plants were extracted and evaluated for in vitro antiplasmodial
activity against D10 (chloroquine-sensitive, CQS) and Gombak A (chloroquine-resistant, CQR)
strains of Plasmodium falciparum. The methanolic crudes from the soxhlet extraction were
active against both strains however, P. urinaria (IC50 8.9 μg/ml with CQR strain) exhibited
better anti-malarial activity compared to P. debilis (IC50 12.2 μg/ml with CQR strain).
Furthermore, the methanolic crude of P. urinaria obtained by the cold extraction has good
anti-malarial activity towards CQS (IC50 4.1 μg/ml). The concentration of macronutrients
(calcium and magnesium) and trace metals (copper, manganese, iron and zinc) from three
Phyllanthus species i.e. P. debilis Klein ex Wild., Phyllanthus niruri L., P. urinaria L. and
Alpinia conchigera Griff. were determined using microwave digestion method and analyzed
by Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. Standard Reference Material 1547 (peach leaves)
was used to validate the method throughout this study. The recovery values were in the range
of 80% to 120% which were in very good agreement with the certified values. The three
Phyllanthus species and leaves of A. conchigera showed the highest concentration of calcium
compared to other metals and macronutrients studied. The significant presence of all the
important macronutrients and trace metals which are essential for human health and wellbeing
substantiate their use medicinally in traditional practices.
2.GENDER DIFFERENCE IN UNDERSTANDING AGEING AND RETIREMENT

The age-old wisdom is that “women live longer than men”. Gender difference in life expectancy is becoming a worldwide phenomenon both in developed and developing countries. The process of ageing may be viewed from the perspectives of physical, psychological, and social-economic wellbeing. We investigated gender difference in understanding ageing in relation to life expectancy, fears relating to diseases and deteriorating economic status, and perceived old age comfort and their preparedness. Data were obtained from an online survey and in-person interview of 518 respondents aged 40 years and older residing in Malaysia, which was based on a convenience sample collected from May 2015 to January 2016. Data were analysed using chi-squared tests and multinomial logistic regression. There were varying views between men and women when it came to understanding ageing in relation to life expectancy, fears of ageing, deteriorating economic status and their perception of old age comfort. Women were more optimistic about living longer compared to men but feared more the consequences of old age diseases. In spite of displaying less concern about financial preparedness, women were, however, willing to cut down expenses, while men would prefer longer working hours to ensure a comfortable retirement
3.Automatic Glaucoma Detection Method Applying a Statistical Approach to Fundus Images

OBJECTIVES: Glaucoma is an incurable eye disease and the second leading cause of blindness in the world. Until 2020, the number of patients of this disease is estimated to increase. This paper proposes a glaucoma detection method using statistical features and the k-nearest neighbor algorithm as the classifier. METHODS: We propose three statistical features, namely, the mean, smoothness and 3rd moment, which are extracted from images of the optic nerve head. These three features are obtained through feature extraction followed by feature selection using the correlation feature selection method. To classify those features, we apply the k-nearest neighbor algorithm as a classifier to perform glaucoma detection on fundus images. RESULTS: To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, 84 fundus images were used as experimental data consisting of 41 glaucoma image and 43 normal images. The performance of our proposed method was measured in terms of accuracy, and the overall result achieved in this work was 95.24%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This research showed that the proposed method using three statistics features achieves good performance for glaucoma detection.

4.Contribution of Arab countries to pharmaceutical wastewater literature: a bibliometric and comparative analysis of research output.

BACKGROUND: Recently, the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry has been growing rapidly in many countries in the world, including in Arab countries. Pharmaceuticals reach aquatic environments and are prevalent at small concentrations in wastewater from the drug manufacturing industry and hospitals. Such presence also occurs in domestic wastewater and results from the disposal of unused and expired medicines. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze and compare the quantity and quality of publications made by researchers in Arab countries on pharmaceutical wastewater. METHODS: To retrieve documents related to pharmaceutical wastewater, we used the Scopus database on November 21, 2015. All documents with terms related to pharmaceutical wastewater in the title or abstract were analysed. Results obtained from Arab countries were compared with those obtained from Turkey, Iran and Israel. RESULTS: Globally, a total of 6360 publications were retrieved while those from Arab countries, Iran, Turkey and Israel, were 179, 113, 96 and 54 publications respectively. The highest share of publications belonged to Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) with a total of 47 (26.2 %) publications, followed by Egypt (38; 21.2 %), Tunisia (17; 9.5 %) and Morocco (16; 8.9 %). The total number of citations was 1635, with a mean of 9.13 and a median (inter quartile range) of 3 (1.0–10.0). The study identified 87 (48.6 %) documents with 32 countries of international collaboration with Arab countries. It was noted that Arab researchers collaborated mainly with authors in Western Europe (54; 30.2 %), followed by authors from the Asiatic region (29; 16.2 %) and Northern America (15; 8.4 %). The most productive institution was King Saud University, KSA (13; 7.3 %), followed by the National Research Centre, Egypt (10; 7.3 %). CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that KSA has the largest share of productivity on pharmaceutical wastewater research. Bibliometric analysis demonstrated that research productivity, mainly from Arab countries in pharmaceutical wastewater research, was relatively lagging behind. More research effort is required for Arab countries to catch up with those of non-Arab Middle Easter countries on pharmaceutical wastewater research.

5.Synthesis, characterization, anti-mycobacterial activity and in silico study of new 2,5-disubstituted-1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives

A series of new 2,5-disubstituted-1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives (5a-j and 6a-j) have been designed and
synthesized in four-steps. Sixteen compounds among the twenty compounds are reported for the first
time. The compounds were characterized and confirmed by the FTIR, 1D- and 2D-NMR and HRMS
analyses, and were tested against Mycobacterium smegmatis and Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Ra.
Compound 5d was the most active against M. smegmatis with MIC value of 25 µM, and exhibited
cidal activity with MBC of 68 µM, respectively. The time-kill assay showed the good killing rate at 77%
with the combination of isoniazid (INH). In addition, checkboard assay confirmed the interaction of
compound 5d was categorised as additive. Docking simulation has been performed to position 5d into
the pantothenate synthetase active site with binding free energy value –8.6 kcal mol-1. It also occupied
the same active site as that of standard native ligand with similar interactions, which clearly indicate
their potential as pantothenate synthetase inhibitor.

Dengue fever is one of major health problem around the world including Malaysia.
It is caused by the arthropode-borne flavivirus and transmitted by the bite of the Aedes
aegypti or Aedes albopictus mosquito infected with one of the four dengue virus serotypes
(DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, or DENV-4). In this study, a screening exercise of various
Malaysian medicinal plants showed that the extracts of Lawsonia inermis, Dryobalanops
aromatica, Punica granatum, Zizyphus jujuba Lam. and Zingiber zerumbet exhibited
potent inhibitory activity against NS2B-NS3 serine protease. The methanol extracts of
Dryobalanops aromatica showed inhibition of 99.70 % at concentration of 200 μg/mL with
IC50 value of 0.30 ± 0.16 μg/mL.
7.Natural DENV-2 NS2B/NS3 protease inhibitors from Myristica cinnamomea King

The NS2B/NS3 protease is crucial for the pathogenesis of the DENV. Therefore, the inhibition of this protease is considered to be the key strategy for the development of new antiviral drugs. In the present study, malabaricones C (3) and E (4), acylphenols from the fruits of Myristica cinnamomea King, have been respectively identified as moderate (27.33 ± 5.45 μM) and potent (7.55 ± 1.64 μM) DENV-2 NS2B/NS3 protease inhibitors, thus making this the first report on the DENV-2 NS2B/NS3 protease inhibitory activity of acylphenols. Based on the molecular docking studies, compounds 3 and 4 both have π-π interactions with Tyr161. While compound 3 has hydrogen bonding interactions with Gly151, Gly153 and Tyr161, compound 4 however, forms hydrogen bonds with Ser135, Asp129, Phe130 and Ile86 instead. The results from the present study suggests that malabaricones C (3) and E (4) could be employed as lead compounds for the development of new dengue antivirals from natural origin.
