BACKGROUND:Titanium clip, commonly used in abdominal surgery and obstetrics and gynecology surgery,
has a great damage to the vascular tissue, and its excessive clipping can cut off the vessel and produce artifacts and deflection MRI on MRI and CT scan. In addition, its biocompatibility is not wel that increases the risks for
local inflammatory response and scarring.
OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical efficacy of absorbable ligating clip in laparoscopic hysterectomy and to evaluate its clinical value.
METHODS: Ninety-eight patients undergoing laparoscopic hysterectomy were randomly divided into two groups: 49 patients in the observation group were subjected to occlusion of the uterine artery by a Johnson absorbable ligating chip and then complete removal of the uterus; 49 patients in the control group were subjected to occlusion of the uterine artery with a titanium clip. Hospital stay and postoperative complications were recorded and
analyzed between the two groups.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The use of absorbable ligating clip in laparoscopic hysterectomy significantly shortened the hospital stay, and postoperative pain, adhesions, pelvic fluid, fever and other complications were significantly reduced (P< 0.05). In addition, no postoperative infection occurred in the two groups and there was no significant difference in the class A healing rate between the two groups (P > 0.05). The results suggest that absorbable ligating clip with better biocompatibility can help to reduce tissue reactions and promote tissue repair, which is characterized as effective, safe and reliable.

Objective: To study the relationship between mental health and achievement motivation of undergraduates. Method: 532 undergraduates completed SCL-90 and Academic Achievement Motive Scale. Results:17.29% subjects had mental problems. Undergraduates had higher score in self-oriented motive than society-oriented motive, while the score of SCL-90 correlated positively with score in society-oriented motive. In students with poor academic achievement, the score of SCL-90 negatively correlated with score in self-oriented motive. Conclusion:Society-oriented motive had negative influence on mental health of undergraduates and in those with poor academic achievement, poor mental health positively correlated with lower self-oriented motive.

Effects of microiontophoretically applied transmitter receptor antagonists on the evoked response of “pain” units of PVN in rats by sciatic stimulation were observed. The results showed: (l)The evoked response of 7 out of 38 PVN “pain” units could be blocked by atropine (7/38); 5 out of 27 by hexamethonium; 6 out of 31 by phentolamine (6/31); and 4 out of 25 by propranolol (4/25). Seventeen out of 52 were blocked by cyproheptadine (17/52), but 3 out of 52 were augmented by cyproheptadine (3/52). (2) The evoked response of the same “pain” unit could be blocked by two antagonists: the evoked response of 2 out of 27 PVN “pain” units could be blocked by atropine and cyprohepadine; 3 out of 20 by hexamethonium and cyproheptadine; 2 out of 25 by prepamolol and cyproheptadine. These results suggest that the noxious somatic input to PVN involves 5-HT, cholinergic and adrenergic transmitter receptor mechanisms and that the convergence of various transmitter systems on PVN “pain” unit is indicated.

Objective By combining the traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) health care service and the current community puerperal women's health management, to explore the feasibility of TCM health management in the grass-roots community on puerperal women’s breast-feeding. Methods 440 patients meeting the inclusion criteria of puerperal women according to the neighborhood of residence were recruited into a non TCM intervention group of 225 people, and a TCM intervention group of 215 people. The non TCM intervention group was given health guidance on puerperal women. On such basis, the TCM intervention group was further cooperated with appropriate technical guidance of TCM. Puerperal women breastfeeding before and after the intervention was studied. Results After the intervention, the milk shortage of puerperal women breastfeeding rate of TCM intervention group was higher than the non TCM intervention group, 76.9% (60/78) vs. 56.9% (41/72), and mixed feeding rate was lower 21.8% (17/78) vs. 40.3%(29/72), the difference was statistically significant (χ2=5.916, 5.178; P < 0.05). The rate of breast feeding and mixed feeding rate were also statistically different between the TCM intervention group and the non TCM intervention group 78.1%(168/215) and 17.2% (37/215) vs. 62.7% (141/225) and 33.3% (75/225), (χ2=11.860, 14.226; P<0.01). Conclusion TCM health management guidance on puerperal women in the community can effectively improve the hypogalactia puerperal women's breastfeeding rate.

Objective:To understand the surveillance of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) in Zhongwei City of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region after marketization reform of salt industry (2017).Methods:In 2018, Shapotou District, Zhongning County and Haiyuan County of Zhongwei City were divided into five sampling areas according to the location of east, west, south, north and middle. In each area, one township was selected, and three salt sales outlets were selected from each township; at the same time, three supermarkets were selected from the cities and towns of each county (district), and different kinds of salt samples in all sales outlets and supermarkets were tested semi-quantitatively. From 2016 to 2020, Shapotou District, Zhongning County and Haiyuan County of Zhongwei City were divided into five sampling areas according to the location of east, west, south, north and middle. One township was selected from each area, and one primary school was selected from each township, 40 non-boarding students aged 8 - 10 years old (age balanced, half males and half females) were selected from each primary school; at the same time, 20 pregnant women were selected from each township, and salt samples were collected from houses of children and pregnant women to test salt iodine content. From 2018 to 2020, according to the "Ningxia Iodine Deficiency Disorders Surveillance Program (2016 Edition)", random urine samples of children and pregnant women were collected to detect urinary iodine content. In 2018 and 2019, the thyroid volume of children was measured by B-mode ultrasound, and the goiter rate was calculated.Results:In 2018, 13 kinds of salt were supplied in the market of Zhongwei City, a total of 130 salt samples were tested, and 11 samples of non-iodized salt were detected, with a rate of 8.46%. From 2016 to 2020, the consumption rates of qualified iodized salt in Zhongwei City were 90.33% (813/900), 67.89% (611/900), 78.67% (708/900), 91.56% (825/901) and 94.44% (850/900), respectively. From 2018 to 2020, the medians urinary iodine of children aged 8 - 10 years old were 189.33, 195.64, and 222.10 μg/L, and the medians urinary iodine of pregnant women were 158.21, 158.01, and 171.84 μg/L, respectively. In 2018 and 2019, the goiter rates of children aged 8 - 10 years old were 1.75% (7/400) and 0.67% (4/600), respectively.Conclusion:After marketization reform of salt industry, the consumption rates of qualified iodized salt in Zhongwei City decrease in 2017 and 2018, however, children and pregnant women have sufficient iodine nutrition, and the goiter rate of children is controlled at a low level.

The role of serum and glucocorticoid-induced kinase 1 (SGK1) pathway in the connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) expression was investigated in cultured human mesangial cells (HMCs) under high glucose. By using RT-PCR and Western blot, the effect of SGK1 on the CTGF expression in HMCs under high glucose was examined. Overexpression of active SGK1 in HMCs transfected with pIRES2-EGFP-S422D hSGK1 (SD) could increase the expression of phosphorylated SGK1 and CTGF as compared with HMCs groups transfected with pIRES2-EGFP (FP) under high glucose or normal glucose. Overexpression of inactive SGK1 in HMCs transfected with pIRES2-EGFP-K127N hSGK1 (KN) could decrease phosphorylated SGK1 and CTGF expression as compared with HMCs groups transfected with FP under high glucose. In conclusion, these results suggest that high glucose-induced CTGF expression is mediated through the active SGK1 in HMCs.

AIM: To assess the affect of ketamine and xylazine (ketamine/xylazine) to the transient lens opacity in mice.METHODS: Kimba mice (n=10) and wild-type mice (wt, n=8) were sedated with intraperitoneal injection of ketamine (60mg/kg for mice) and xylazine (10mg/kg) at 4, 8, 12 and 16 weeks old respectively. Pupils were dilated with tropicamide 25g/L alone to allow imaging lens status and retina using Spectralis HRA+OCT. RESULTS: All Kimba mice and wt presented extreme proptosis, suppression of the eye-blink reflex, corneal surface drying and lens opacities which occurred as early as 21±6 minutes after giving anesthesia and the lens opacities lasted up to 150±24 minutes.CONCLUSION: Ketamine/xylazine can cause transient lens opacity that may be related with the drugs side-effect.

Objective To investigate the effect of As2 O3 in combination with cinobufacini on proliferation and apoptosis of the K562 cells and provide theoretical basis for clinical application.Methods Cell proliferation was assayed by analyzing the growth and viability of the cells.Apoptosis was assayed by performing cell morphology,Annexin-V/PI staining,DNA-PI staining,and DNA gel electrophoresis.Results After exposure to As2O3 and cinobufacini,the growth of K562 cells was inhibited and the viability of K562 cells was decreased. After treated with 1.0μmol/L As2O3,0.125μg/ml cinobufacini,0.25μg/ml cinobufacini,1.0μmol/L As2O3 + 0.125 μg/ml cinobufacini,1.0μmol/L As2O3 + 0.25μg/ml cinobufacini for 24 and 48 hours,the proliferation inhibition rate were(24 ± 1.3)%,(21 ± 1.5)%,(38 ± 3.1)%,(57 ±2.7)%,(66 ±3.3)% and(49 ±2.9)%,(48 ±2.7)%,(61 ±2.1)%,(77 ±3.8)%,(82 ±4.2)%,the apoptosis rate of K562 cells were(4.8 ± 0.5)%,(5.6 ± 0.7)%,(9.8 ± 0.6)%,(11.9 ± 1.2)%,(15.2±1.5)% and(11.0 ±0.9)%,(12.9 ±1.1)%,(18.4 ±1.5)%,(21.0 ±2.0)%,(28.0 ±1.9)%.The percentage of apoptotic cells was a time- and dose-dependent manner.Typical DNA ladder was shown by DNA gel electrophoresis.Conclusions As2O3 combined with cinobufacini inhibited the proliferation of K562 cells and induced apoptosis of the K562 cells,the combination of the two drugs had better effect.

Background: Positron Emission Tomography and Computed Tomography (PET-CT) imaging is shown to influence a decision change in managing non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). The introduction of such a facility in Malaysia is relatively recent, and its impact from its utility is currently being assessed. Aim: In a tertiary referral centre possessing the only PET-CT facility in northern Peninsular Malaysia, we evaluated the potential roles of PET-CT in referred patients with non-small cell lung carcinoma. Methodology: Sixty eligible adult cases with NSCLC, between September 2005 and December 2007, were retrospectively reviewed. Relevant data was collected using standard questionnaire for indications, staging of disease, and outcomes in terms of recurrence and response to prescribed cancer-specific therapy. Results: The indications for PET-CT were: staging of a newly diagnosed non-small cell lung carcinoma (25.0%); post-operative restaging (21.7%); exclusion of recurrence or metastasis (18.3%); establishing diagnosis of carcinoma (13.3%); assessment of response to treatment (11.7%), and for surveillance (10.0%). The use of PET-CT was shown to induce a change in the staging, compared with non-PET conventional means in 69.2% of patients with newly diagnosed lung carcinoma (upstaged in 55.5%; downstaged in 44.5%) and in 65.0% of patients who underwent cancer-specific treatments (upstaged in 38.5%; downstaged in 61.5%). PET-CT detected recurrence in 62.5% who underwent the imaging to exclude a recurrence or metastasis. Conclusion: PET-CT has affected the staging of a large proportion of our local Malaysian patients. Like elsewhere, the availability of such a facility is likely to have important influence in overall management of NSCLC in Malaysia.
