OBJECTIVETo probe the optimal acupuncture treatment program for juvenile simple obesity.

METHODSNinety cases were randomly divided into 3 groups: ear acupuncture group, body acupuncture group and control group. The patients of the control group were treated by regulating diet structure, increasing motion and mental direct of slimming, in the body acupuncture group, body acupuncture at Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Tianshu (ST 25), Zusanli (ST 36), etc. were added, and in the ear acupuncture group, acupuncture at ear acupoints Jidian (hunger point), Pizhixia (subcortex), earshenmen, etc. were added. Seventy days later, the therapeutic effects and changes of blood lipids were observed. And they were followed up after one month.

RESULTSThe total effective rate was 69.23% in the body acupuncture group, 65.52% in the ear acupuncture group and 26.67% in the control group, with significant differences as the two acupuncture groups compared with the control group. And there were significant differences in total cholesterol (TC) and lower density lipid protein-cholesterol (LDL-C) as the two acupuncture groups compared with the control group. There was no significant difference between the two acupuncture groups in all the indexes.

CONCLUSIONBoth ear acupuncture and body acupuncture have obvious therapeutic effect on juvenile simple obesity, and have some actions on blood lipids.

OBJECTIVETo probe into the mechanism and the best program of acupuncture for slimming.

METHODSThe patients were randomly divided into a control group (n = 60) treated with diet control and exercise, and a treatment group treated with acupuncture, auricular point sticking, TDP radiation. Changes of body weight, cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG) and blood sugar (BS) before and after treatment were investigated.

RESULTSThe effective rate of the treatment group (91.6%) was better than that of the control group (28.3%).

CONCLUSIONAcupuncture, auricular point sticking and TDP radiation combined with diet control and exercise are a better program for slimming, and decreasing appetite, promoting lipid decomposition metabolism are the mechanism of acupuncture in slimming.

METHODSFifty cases were randomly divided into a treatment group of 25 cases treated with auricular point sticking, and a control group of 25 cases treated with normal acupuncture.

RESULTSThe total effective rate was 92.0% in the treatment group and 64.0% in the control group with a significant difference between the two groups (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONAuricular point sticking has a good effect on child semiluxation of circo-axis vertebrae.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify health problems in clinical nurses through an examination of their auricular acupuncture points. METHODS: Data were collected from 90 nurses working in D city. Participants' ears were photographed and their auricular points were analyzed. Data analysis was performed by descriptive statistics and the χ2 test. RESULTS: Musculoskeletal problems were the most severe, followed by problems of the digestive, nervous, and reproductive systems, in that order. Furthermore, the average number of health problems was 5.22, with a range of 4 to 6. Leg/foot pain was the highest reported musculoskeletal problem, followed by shoulder and lumbar/back pain. Gastric ptosis was the highest reported digestive problem, followed by indigestion and hypersensitive colitis. Additionally, among participants with gastric ptosis, lumbar pain was significantly high. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that further research using an auricular points as a diagnosis and treatment point is necessary to improve the health of nurses.

Cigarette smoking is considered to be the single most preventable cause of premature death and the most important challenge in primary care. The epidemic is already killing 20,000 Filipinos every year with the number of smoking-related deaths likely to rise steeply over the next few years. In other countries, ear acupuncture is a therapy frequently offered for this purpose. Uncontrolled studies with acupuncture have reported smoking cessation rates as high as 95 percent. There were no local studies found in the literature Objectives: The general objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness of ear acupuncture plus structured counseling versus structured counseling alone in decreasing mean cigarette stick consumption among smokers consulting in the Family Medicine Clinic. Design: This was an open randomized controlled trial of adult smokers in the contemplation and planning stage of quitting smoking and consulting in the Family Medicine Out-patient Clinic. Ear acupuncture plus structured counseling or structured counseling alone were compared as to the mean cigarette sticks consumed per day at the end of two weeks, one month, two months and three months, as well as compared as to the quit rate at the end of the three months. Intervention: The structured counseling involved a patient-centered, brief but extensive health education and goal-setting. This was given to both the control and the treatment groups. The treatment group received additional six sessions of ear acupuncture treatment. Results: In terms of demographic profile and intention to quit at baseline, there were no significant differences between the two groups (p value.05) except with regards to gender differences (p value=.02). The average number of sticks consumed per day decreased in both groups after two weeks, one month, two months and three months, but with greater decrease in mean cigarette stick consumption in the treatment group across all follow-up periods (p=.01). Quit rate at the end of three months was found to be higher in the structured counseling plus ear acupuncture group (40 percent) as compared to structured counseling alone group (18 percent) but this was not statistically significant (p value.05) No ear acupuncture complications were found in the treatment group at the end of the three month observation period. Conclusion: Structured counseling and ear acupuncture, alone and in combination, is effective in decreasing the mean cigarette stick consumption per day. But the combination of structured counseling plus ear acupuncture is more effective in decreasing cigarette consumption than structured counseling alone among adult smokers consulting in the Family Medicine Out-patient Clinic. This can be a new strategy for smoking cessation for our Filipino patients.

Some issues on the auricular acupuncture including its effectiveness and side effects, the relationship of positive reaction and diseases, the key point of auricular point selection and standard auricular point popularization and application, are debated in this paper according to the authors' comprehension based on their many years clinical and teaching practice. In the paper, the authors point out that the auricular acupuncture has the characteristics of the high effective rate, low cured rate and some recurrence rate. The relationship of positive reacted point in the auricular acupuncture and disease include two kinds of reaction as "one point for multiple diseases" and "one disease for multiple points". Correct locating and reasonable selection of auricular points are the key point for using auricular point. Finally, the authors propose that standard auricular point still has not been popularized, and also, it should be paid attention to the problem of side effect induced by the auricular acupuncture.

OBJECTIVETo observe and evaluate the short-term and long-term curative effects of the synthetic auricular point therapy on the common migraine in attack stage.

METHODSWith the study method of randomized controlled trial, 108 cases of common migraine at the attack stage were randomly assigned to a treatment group of 72 cases treated with synthetic auricular point therapy (blood-letting on the ear back, point injection of own blood, pricking ear point), and a control group of 36 cases treated with Western medicine. Their short-term and long-term curative effects were observed and evaluated.

RESULTSThe total short-term effective rate and the total long-term effective rate were respectively 98.6% and 79. 6% in the treatment group with less adverse effects, and with a very significant difference as compared with the control group (P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONThe synthetic auricular point therapy has obvious short-term and long-term curative effects on common migraine at the attack stage with safety.

The new development on the international standard of nomenclature and location of auricular acupoints (AAP) was stated in this paper. The similarities and differences of the auricular acupuncture system in various countries were compared in this paper in order to provide suggestions and strategies for international standard of no menclature and location of AAP. In this paper, the international standard of AAP as a common language for international academic exchanges, the guidance for beginners and a basis for further research was mentioned. There were similarities and differences in the nomenclature and location of AAP in China and abroad. It was worthwhile to clarify the similarities and differences in order to promote the process of international standard of AAP. The five basic principles for the international standard of AAP are the basic research of auricular anatomy, the total auricular acupuncture points, principles for nomenclature, the practicality and the accuracy.
