In order to study on epidemiological factors, clinical manifestation of AIDS patients in Vietnam, a retrospective study on 5247 AIDS patients in the whole country has been conducted from 1993-2001. The results of study showed that most of AIDS patients were male and young and almost cases used the injection. Clinical manifestations were prolonged fever and persistent diarrhea over 1 month and persistent diarrhea. Duration of HIV infected to AIDS and to death was short. It needs to implement voluntary counseling testing program and strengthen AIDS survey activities in Vietnam.

A study on 42 patients with ages of 16-49, and HIV/AIDS infection in the Institute of Clinical Medicine and tropical diseases during 1998-1999 has shown that HIV infection usually occurred in adults (male/female ratio>1). During 1997-1998, The Hµ Néi HIV/AIDS Control Committee deployed the model of helping the HIV/AIDS patients integrating in the community. The authors investigated some factors that increase the risk of spreading HIV/AIDS. Subjects were persons with HIV/AIDS who were registered at AIDS Prevention and Control Office of Hoa Binh province. It was revealed that HIV/AIDS epidemic have been spreading rapidly. It has occurred mainly in young adult and most cases are males. People at high risk are injected drug users.

It should be assured that at least 90% of young people (in the year 2005) and 95% of them (in 2010) with ages of 15-24 will approach to the education and information of HIV/AIDS, including the peer and specific education. In 1999, the HIV/AIDS epidemic has developed rapidly and spread widely to 61 out of 61 provinces and cities. The epidemic has developed mainly in drug injected users, but it tends to increase in sex industrial workers and develop to general population, especially in thirties. HIV/AIDS remains an urgent problem now because of increase in number, expanse in geography, younger in age and tends to invade more deeply to general population.

By routine methods of research of National AIDS Committee of Vietnam, the authors described the status of HIV infection in Lang son(1993-1998): Langson is one of five provinces that have had the greatest number of HIV cases in Vietnam. It covered 11/11 districts, was almost in the group of ages from 15 to 45, it took 91,8% in male. The group of the highest risk was intravenous drug users (81,3%). At the same time, we have given some basic proposals to prevent HIV in Langson.

Randomly selected subjects to find anti-HCV, anti-HIV, HBsAg by ELISA technique. Results: the coinfection of HCV/HBV was 23% at group of patients with viral hepatitis, 22% in group of prisoners, 0% in group of venereal disease, normal people in urban areas, people lived in coastline and in islands. Coinfections of HBV/HCV were 47% at group of patients with viral hepatitis, 6% in prisoners. 0% in group of venereal diseases, normal people in urban areas, people lived in islands. Coinfections HIV/HCV was 93% at group of intravenous drug abuse, 25% at group of prostitute, 18% at group of patients with viral hepatitis, 0% at group of venereal diseases and normal people in urban areas, people lived in islands. Coinfection of all 3 viruses was 2,3% in patients with viral hepatitis

1.Through the study carried out on 505 drug users, including 149 HIV positive drug users and 61 drug-use-associated AIDS patients in 3 drug treatment centers in Khanh hoa, Daklak provinces and Ho Chi Minh City from August to October 1997, the following conclusions have been gained: There are differences in age between groups (average : 30). 60.9% of HIV (-) drug users group were below 30 years old but 87.9% and 95.1% HIV (+) and AIDS groups were over 30 years old respectively. As many as 69.7% of subjects finished secondary school. Most of them were labors, doing small trade and some of them were jobless. 22% of them were reported divorced, separated and being widows/widowers. 37,8% had blood brothers who also were drug addicts. On the average, the study subjects had gone in drug treatment center around 2 to 4 times, with the highest frequency shown among HIV/AIDS groups. 2. The rate of drug users who were aware of AIDS prevention measures was high: 70.6% knew about the need of using clean needles and syringes; 80.9% understood that condom use help prevent HIV transmission. 3. However, safe practices were still applied at a low level: 57.1% of subjects shared injecting equipment, only 20.6% used disposable syringes; the rate of using condoms was 34.9%,of which 45.6% used condoms regularly and more condom use was reported during sexual intercourse with sex workers than with their wives.
