1.Identification and Characterization of Macrophomina phaseolina Causing Leaf Blight on White Spider Lilies (Crinum asiaticum and Hymenocallis littoralis) in Malaysia

Crinum asiaticum and Hymenocallis littoralis, commonly known as spider lilies are bulbous perennial and herbaceous plants that widely planted in Malaysia as ornamental. During 2015–2016, symptom of leaf blight was noticed on the hosts from several locations in Penang. The symptom appeared as irregular brown to reddish lesions surrounded by yellow halos. As the disease progressed, the infected leaves became blighted, dried, and fell off with the presence of black microsclerotia and pycnidia on the lesions parts. The present study was conducted to investigate the causal pathogen of leaf blight on C. asiaticum and H. littoralis. Based on morphological characteristics and DNA sequences of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF1-α) gene, the causal pathogen was identified as Macrophomina phaseolina. Phylogenetic analysis of combined dataset of ITS and TEF1-α grouped the isolates studied with other isolates of M. phaseolina from GenBank. The grouping of the isolates was supported by 96% bootstrap value. Pathogenicity test proved the role of the fungus in causing leaf blight on both hosts.

The Takotsubo syndrome is an acquired, non-ischemic stress-induced cardiomyopathy popularly known as the ‘broken heart syndrome’. It is an acute left ventricular dysfunction presenting mostly in older women after an intensely stressful event. The exact pathophysiology remains elusive. The term came into existence in the early 1990s in Japan, where the distinctive change in the shape of the left ventricle with apical ballooning during systole, resembled the Takotsubo, an octopus pot used bythe Japanese fisherman. From a rare underrecognized syndrome, it has been increasingly recognised as a form of acute cardiac failure. Clinical diagnosis of the syndrome may be unidentified due to its similarity with the acute coronary syndrome, but without the narrowing of coronary vessels in angiographic imaging. There is a substantial elevation of the cardiac biomarkers, troponin and the natriuretic peptides which helps in differentiating the Takotsubo syndrome from myocardial infarction. A case report of a 59-year old Malaysian lady with typical, recurrent episodes of the Takotsubo syndrome is presented.

3.Nutritional and Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Status Association with Fall among Older Persons in Malaysia: Findings from National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) Malaysia 2018

Introduction:
Fall is a health problem for older persons. This study investigates the potential
factors of concern: the nutritional status of older persons and non-communicable
disease association with incidence of falls.
Methods:
This study used data from NHMS 2018, and conducted a cross-sectional design
by applying two-stage stratified cluster sampling. Descriptive statistics such as
the percentage of each variable were done. Factors associated with falls were
determined at both univariate and multivariable levels using simple logistic
regression and multiple logistic regression. The data were presented as standard
values for each analysis and adjusted odds ratios with 95% CI with p values
(<0.05).
Results:
A total of 3,867 from 3,977 elderly (mean age 68.2+ 6.85) were recruited with
the response rate of 97.2%. Factors associated with fall were 70 years old and
above (AOR= 1.34, 95% CI: 1.09, 1.64), obesity (AOR=1.55, 95% CI: 1.21,
1.98), undernutrition (AOR=1.59, 95% CI: 1.30, 1.94), persons with 2 NCDs
(AOR=1.49, 95% CI: 1.15, 1.92) and persons with 3 NCDs (AOR=1.63, 95%
CI: 1.23, 2.16).
Conclusions
Advanced age, malnutrition, obesity, and having two or more NCDs are
associated with falls in the NHMS 2018 study. In conclusion, falls are prevalent
among older persons. There is an urgent need for public health strategies and
programmes to decrease the incidence of modifiable risk factors and early
identification of those at risk. Implementation of fall preventive programs which
includes multifactorial interventions at hospitals and homes can also
significantly reduce incidence of falls among older persons
