Hyperthermia is a significant and promising technique for tumor treatment. Temperature is the key parameter which influences the treatment effectiveness. Therefore, real-time and precise noninvasive temperature monitoring is the pivotal issue in further development of hyperthermia. This paper introduced the noninvasive monitoring theories and techniques of hyperthermia based on ultrasonic image texture features, and reviewed the achievements both abroad and at home. In addition, some problems to be solved necessary were also pointed out.

The combination of the cryosurgery using LN2 and intelligent RF ablation therapeutic instrument based on the theory of local destruction is introduced in this paper, and this alternating therapy is believed to have a better controlling effect on tumor ablation. In heating period, a fuzzy algorithm is used to control the RF power to realize a more smoothly heating process to the target area.

Small-scale intellectualized medical instrument has attracted great attention in the field of biomedical engineering, and LabVIEW (Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering Workbench) provides a convenient environment for this application due to its inherent advantages. The principle and system structure of the hyperthermia instrument are presented. Type T thermocouples are employed as thermotransducers, whose amplifier consists of two stages, providing built-in ice point compensation and thus improving work stability over temperature. Control signals produced by specially designed circuit drive the programmable counter/timer 8254 chip to generate PWM (Pulse width modulation) wave, which is used as ultrasound radiation energy control signal. Subroutine design topics such as inner-tissue real time feedback temperature control algorithm, water temperature control in the ultrasound applicator are also described. In the cancer tissue temperature control subroutine, the authors exert new improvments to PID (Proportional Integral Differential) algorithm according to the specific demands of the system and achieve strict temperature control to the target tissue region. The system design and PID algorithm improvement have experimentally proved to be reliable and excellent, meeting the requirements of the hyperthermia system.

We developed an ultrasound tumor hyperthermia instrument by optimizing the embedded platform and system units construction to realize miniaturization and portability. The instrument can accurately and safely control the target temperature by using PID feedback algorithm.

Physical ablation is a new kind of tumor treatment which directly acts on local solid tumors to eradicate or destroy tumor tissues by use of various advanced physical techniques. Physical ablation can be classified by physical characteristics as thermal ablate therapy (TAT), cryoablation and electrical ablation. Recent studies and technical trend of these three physical ablation treatments are reviewed in this paper.

Blood temperature-varying has been widely applied in clinical practice such as extracorporeal circulation for whole-body perfusion hyperthermia (WBPH), body rewarming and blood temperature-varying in organ transplantation. This paper reports a novel DCS (Computer distributed control)-based blood temperature-varying system which includes therapy management function and whose hardware and software can be extended easily. Simulation results illustrate that this system provides precise temperature control with good performance in various operation conditions.

Tumor combined therapeutic system, a kind of medical instrument to restrain and kill tumor, is based on radio frequency heating technique and biological heating effect theory. It can be used solely or in combination with chemotherapy and actinotherapy for tumor hyperthermia. Combined with hardware measurement and adjustment, as well as application of the improved PID algorithm to the system of temperature control, the required accurate temperature control which directly influences the curative effect is realized. The experimental results presented in this paper demonstrated that the equipment works stably and reliably, and it is of good usefulness.

OBJECTIVEA 2.45 GHz microstrip applicator using single rectangle sheet structure is presented.

METHODSBased on the radiant principle of microstrip antenna, the applicator's parameter is designed and the simulating model is set and optimized in HFSS.

RESULTSMeasured by network analyzer, the technical target of this applicator is complied with design demand. During irradiation experiment, based on 30 W power, 30 mm radiation distance and 15 min duration experiment condition, the thermal field distribution map of phantom is obtained from the far-infrared image instrument. The 3D map shows that the region of thermal field centre has small radius and deep heat penetration.

CONCLUSIONThe microwave energy from this applicator can reach the tumor in superficial layer without heat injuring normal tissue around it.

It has been a long time since ultrasound hyperthermia began to be used in the clinical management of cancers and benign diseases. Numerous biological and clinical investigations have demonstrated that: hyperthermia in the range of 41-45 degrees C can significantly enhance clinical response to radiation therapy and chemotherapy, and high-temperature hyperthermia (greater than 65 degrees C) alone is now being used as an alternative to conventional invasive surgery for selective tissue destruction, causing tumor coagulation and necrosis. As a promising noninvasive and effective local therapy, HIFU has attracted great attention. China is advanced in the clinical applications of HIFU. This article gives an introduction of the development and applications of ultrasound hyperthermia technology, and also provides a general review of a selection of ultrasound hyperthermia systems both in clinical use and under development.
