OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the factors associated with suicide attempt among psychiatry inpatients aged 15 to 24 years old, admitted for suicidal ideations or behavior at The Medical City during a five-year study period, January 2013 to December 2017; to describe the demographic and clinical profile of these patients; and to determine if there was an association between demographic and clinical factors as well as suicidal attempt in this population. METHODOLOGY: This retrospective chart review, investigated the association between demographic and clinical variables, and suicide attempt in a sample of suicidal psychiatry inpatients aged 15-24 years old, during a 5-year study period. The sample was subdivided into two subsets according to the presence or absence of suicide attempts in their lifetime. The demographic and clinical variables were then collected, analyzed, and compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The present study reviewed 199 charts of suicidal psychiatry inpatients aged 15-24 years old hospitalized from 2013 to 2017 at The Medical City. The present study found an increasing trend in the number of psychiatric inpatients aged 15 to 24 who were confined for suicidal ideation and/or behavior over the course of the study period. Of the 199 subjects included in the study, 119 (59.8%) had attempted suicide, while 80 (40.2%) had not. CONCLUSION On comparison of the demographic and clinical factors among patients with a suicide attempt versus without an attempt, sex was found to be significantly associated with an attempt (p-value = 0.01). Specifically, the odds of a suicide attempt was twice higher among females (odds ratio = 2.27). Among the other demographic and clinical variables studied, no sufficient statistical evidence was found to declare significant statistical association with suicide attempt. This suggests that etiological factors related to suicide attempts for male and females may differ, hence such nuances need to be taken into account in the clinical assessment and design of interventions to prevent suicide.

OBJECTIVES: This study described the prevalence of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts among adult patients diagnosed with psoriasis. METHODOLOGY: A Knowledge and Belief survey composed of: 1) a questionnaire on medical, psychiatric and psoriasis profile and 2) a knowledge, attitude and belief questionnaire was developed validated and translated to both English and Filipino. The survey questionnaire was uploaded in the internet using a free site Kwiksurvey.com. Psor Phil (an organization of patients with psoriasis) had sent email invitations to 699 members to answer an on line survey, which would be available for 9 days. The data on suicide ideation and attempt were analyzed and presented. RESULTS: A total of 120 entries were included in the study. The response rate of the survey was (120/699) 17.16%. A total of 17/120 (14.17%) reported suicidal ideation and a total of 9 /120 (7.5%) reported suicidal attempt. CONCLUSION The reported prevalence of suicidal ideation was higher compared to other studies. Patients disclosed suicidal ideation to friends rather than family members or doctors.

The burden of suicide increases globally in ages 15-19 as they are more vulnerable to risky behaviors [8]. The Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Study of 2013 (YAFS4) suggests further analysis and accounting for other related variables to determine if a true relationship between educational attainment and suicide is reflected. An analytic cross-sectional study was employed using secondary data from the YAFS4. The proportion of suicide attempt among the different education levels and its confounders was determined using point and interval estimates, whereas the association between educational attainment and suicide attempt was determined through multiple logistic regression analysis. Results revealed a high prevalence of suicide attempt among those with 'No schooling/Elementary' (38.36%), who have used alcohol (36.15%) and drugs (50.82%), and identified as 'bisexual' or with an 'identity crisis' (52.00%). Overall, there was an association between educational attainment and suicide attempt. The odds of suicide attempt was 1.69 times higher among those with “No schooling/Elementary” as compared to those “College Graduates or Higher”, and was the only group found to be statistically significant even after controlling for socioeconomic status. An association exists between educational attainment and suicide attempt, wherein having a lower level of education has higher odds of suicide attempt. The study suggests that interventions start as early as elementary school and focus on the out-of-school youth. Additionally, future research may also look further into the confounding effects of socioeconomic status and the mechanisms involved.

Older persons are at higher risk for suicide than any other age group and elderly suicide is a critical public health problem. Attempted suicide in elderly is very lethal, therefore it's management must be accompanied by prevention. Though, there are few reports about risk factors in elderly suicide, and significant differences in the data between western and eastern world. So, there should be researches about risk factors influenced by peculiar cultural and regional circumstances, and these make it possible to detect elderly suicide early by education and community efforts.

Introduction: The year 2000 World Health Organization reports that the age didtribution of suicide has changed such that the rates for those aged 5-44 years old have increased from 40% to 55%, while those aged 45 and above have decreasing suicide rates of 60% to 45%. In the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), the proportion of child and adolescent suicide cases has increased from 35.8% and 26% in 2003-2004 to 41.7% and 58.4% 2005-2006. To date, local studies on risk factors affecting adolescent suicide have not been done and the number of adolescent attempting to kill themselves in a country known for its close family ties and catholic practices continue to rise. Objectives: To describe the profile of Filipino children who committed suicide or parasuicide and characterize them in terms of history of substance use versus patients without a history of substance use in terms of the following variables: demographics, nature of suicide, and risk factors for suicide. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional chart review of all Filipino charity patients aged 18 years and below, seen at the PGH Department of Emergency Services (DEMS) from the period January 1, 2006 to October 31, 2007 was done. Data was analyzed using frequency count distribution and ratio and proportion. Results and Conclusions: A total of 56 charts were reviewed for the study. The profile of the Filipino child who attempted suicide in this study can be described as: majority is female, single aged 14-18 years, RC, high school students, and unemployed. Most common method of suicide attempt was through ingestion of silver jewelry cleaner following family conflict. No mortality was reported. Suicide risk factors which appear to be significant in this population are substance use, domestic situation, and involvement in a relationship. Further characterization of the group into those with and without a history of substance use also suggests that increasing age, a lower educational attainment, employment status, family history of suicide, marital status of parents, domestic situation, and involvement in a relationship are factors that may influence substance use among this vulnerable population. Recommendations: Early psychiatric evaluation of alcoholic drinkers among adolescents and parental psycho-education in school should be done to curb the rising incidence of suicide attempts in this vulnerable population. Further, prospective and multicenter studies involving more subjects are needed to validate findings in this study.

A case of a 32-year old male with a longstanding history of detachment from social relationships. He is generally restricted with regard to emotional expression. Immediate impetus for confinement was a suicide attempt. He was noted to have suicidal ideation and thoughts of death. His medical history and neurological performance were unremarkable. He was treated with an antipsychotic, an antidepressant, and a benzodiazepine, which seemed to improve his psychological state.

OBJECTIVES: To examine psychosocial correlates of suicide attempts in a community population. METHODS: This study investigated suicide attempt history, demographic and psychosocial characteristics including depression using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and responses to a questionnaire about attitudes toward suicide in a community sample. The demographic and psychosocial correlates of suicide attempts were evaluated using univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS: A total of 1,578 people completed the survey. Of these, 100 people (6.3%) had attempted suicide. In the univariate analyses, risk factors for attempted suicide were divorce, lower level of education, lack of a stable job, living in a rented house, undergoing psychiatric treatment, a family history of psychiatric illness, and being depressed (BDI > or =22). In the multivariate analysis, living in a rented house, undergoing psychiatric treatment, and being depressed were significantly associated with attempted suicide. Of the individuals who had attempted suicide, 42.0% were currently depressed, whereas the prevalence of depression in those who had not attempted suicide was 9.1%. In addition, individuals who had attempted suicide had permissive attitudes toward suicide and negative attitudes toward treatment for suicidal behavior. CONCLUSION: Attempted suicide was significantly associated with depression. Therefore, immediate and appropriate psychiatric treatment for depression in those attempting suicide is crucial.

PURPOSE: To identify the types and characteristics of subjective structures among nursing students toward individuals who attempt suicide. METHODS: A group of 32 third- and fourth-year nursing students with experience in clinical practice rated 35 Q-statements on a nine-point scale according to their opinion. Data analysis was conducted using the PC-Quanl program. RESULTS: Subjectivity among nursing students toward individuals who attempt suicide was analyzed for three types. Type 1 (social responsibility emphasis) subjectivity recognizes the social responsibility for suicide attempts and emphasizes the importance of social support systems as a preventive effort. Type 2 (rational reprimand) subjectivity emphasizes the willpower and effort to overcome challenges in life, because happiness and unhappiness are dependent on one's thoughts and will. Type 3 (situation acceptance) subjectivity regards the suicide attempt as an optional means to avoid a deeply strenuous, painful, and difficult situation. CONCLUSION: This study investigated the subjectivity of nursing students toward individuals who attempt suicide and to provide a better understanding of them. In addition, the development of training programs that take advantage of the subjective characteristics of individuals based on subjectivity types demonstrated in this study is expected to provide nursing students with useful educational materials for their future careers as nurses.
