- Abstract: Three-dimensional (3D) printing is regarded as the third industrial revolution. It includes a wide variety of manufacturing techniques, which are all based on digitally-controlled depositing of materials(layer-by-layer) to create freeform geometries. It is rapidly developed in various areas including space field, architecture, manufacturing, and pharmaceutical industry. From a medical and therapeutic perspective, 3D printing is of great potential advantage for producing personalized medicines owing to its accurate control of drug structure, precise drug loading. This paper aims to review three different 3D printing technologies that can be used in pharmaceutics, including inkjet printing, fused-deposition modeling, and stereolithography apparatus to manufacture personalized tablets, implants, drug-containing microneedles, and films. Pharmaceutics is seeing a turning point and that 3D printing ofpersonalized medicines and customized dosage forms is set to revolutionize the drug delivery.
