Clinical Observation on the Cases of Orbital Computed Tomography and Orbital Tumors.

Abstract:
A clinical analysis was made on in-patients with 69 cases of orbital CT Scanning and 25 operated cases, who were referred to our clinic during the last 3 years, from 1977 to 1980. The results which were analized by orbital CT Scanning and pathological findings were obtained as follows: 1) All age groups were represented in the orbital CT Scanning analysis. The sexual distr ibution taken the orbital CT Scanning revealed 44 males (63.8%) and 25 females (36.2%). 2) The chief complaints of those having the orbital CT Scanning were proptosis (65.2%), abnormalities of the extraocular muscle movements (49.3%), visual disturbance, ptosis with lid edema, and ocular pain in that erder. 3) The positional frequencies of the orbital tumors, which were noted by orbital CT Scanning, were superior-nasal quadrant, superior-temporal quadrant, inferior-nasal quadrant, inferior-temporal quadrant and orbit respectively. 4) The crbital CT Scanning showed 100 percent accuracy in determining the position of the tumor and 64 percent accuracy was seen in diagnosing the nature of the tumor as comp ared with pathological findings. The results show that orbital CT Scanning is a very accurate method of investigating the orbit. 5) The common orbital tumors were benign hemangioma and inflammatory pseudotumor. Fifteen of the orbital tumors were benign and eight were malignant. 6) The commonly used operating methods to remove the orbital tumor were superior orbitotomy (46.2%) and Kronlein operation (23.0%). 7) Slight degree limitation of the eyeball movement and ptosis were frequently noted as postoperative complications.
