Clinical characteristics and estrogen receptor expression of tamoxifen-related endometrial carcinoma

Abstract:
Objective: To investigate the clinical characteristics and the expression of estrogen receptor in subsequent endometrial carcinoma induced by tamoxifen in the patients with breast carcinoma and explore the underlying mechanism. Methods: Retrospective analysis was performed on 33 cases of endometrial carcinoma induced by administration of tamoxifen for breast carcinoma from January 1990 to December 2006. The 33 cases were regarded as study group (TAMET group) and 50 patients with normal endometrial carcinoma were considered as control group (ET group). The expression of estrogen receptor α and β in tumor tissues was detected by immunohistochernical method. Results: The histological subtypes of TAMET group are mostly high-differentiated adenocarcinoma with well histological differentiation and early pathological stage. There was no significant difference in estrogen receptor α and β expression between TAMET and ET group in premenopausal women. The expression of estrogen receptor α and β was higher in TAMET group than those in ET group in menopausal women. The difference was significant. Conclusion: The mechanism for the carcinogenesis of endometrial carcinoma is different in TAMET and ET groups during menopausal period. TAM participates the carcinogenesis of TAMET via ER β receptor.
