Abstract:
Objective: To study the clinical outcome of three dimensional conformal radiotherapy(3D-CRT) on locally advanced rectal cancer and recurrent rectal cancer. Methods: Sixty patients with locally advanced or recurrent rectal cancer were irradiated by external radiothe-rapy at a total dosage of 40 Gy. The 60 patients were divided randomly into two groups: one group received late-course 3D-CRT (3D-CRT group, n = 30) and the other group received conventional radiotherapy (control group, n = 30). Results: The overall response rates were 86.7% for the 3D-CRT group and 70% for the control group, respectively. There was no statistical difference between the two groups (P > 0.05). The overall 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates were 80%, 53.3%, and 36.7% for the 3D-CRT group and 56.7%, 40%, and 13.3% the for control group, respectively. The difference was significant (P = 0.0213). The 1-, 2-, and 3-year local control rates were 86.7%, 80%, and 50% for 3D-CRT group and 73.3%, 53.3%, and 30% for the control group, respectively. There was significant difference (P = 0.0438). There was no significant difference in the incidence rate of adverse reaction between the two groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Conventional external radiotherapy plus 3D-CRT has better efficacy on locally advanced or recurrent rectal cancer in clinic.
