Abstract:
Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are present in tumor-bearing mice and most cancer patients with suppressive activity of immune response. They comprise a variety of myeloidderived immature and highly heterogeneous cellular populations, including dendritic cells, macrophages and/ or granulocytes. Tumor-derived biological factors are responsible for the expansion, mobilization and activation of MDSCs. MDSCs in tumor-bearing mice typically express CD11b+Gr1+. MDSCs derived from human tumors are defined as CD11b positive and CD14 negative. In tumor-bearing mice, MDSCs accumulate in bone marrow, spleen and peripheral blood. In cancer patients, MDSCs are present in the blood. MDSCs play an important role in immune suppression and angiogenesis promotion, which enhance tumor growth and distant metastasis. Reducing the function and number of MDSCs contributes to relieving the capacities of distinguishing and killing cancer cells, as well as enhancing the efficacy of anti-tumor drugs.
