Abstract:
There is no medical cure for inflammatory bowel disease currently. However, when pharmacological therapy, nutritional therapy and surgery are combined, remission of the disease could be induced.Malnutrition is a major complication in IBD,and it is associated with increased mortality and worse clinical outcome.Inflammatory bowel diseases and other conditions characterized by chronic inflammation can alter the homeostasis of muscles, bones, and fat,and they are involved in the pathogenesis of malnutrition and sarcopenia. The importance of sarcopenia in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases should not be ignored.
