Abstract:
A prospective study was carried out to evaluate the severity of asthma by classification and to evaluate the GINA-based treatment. 102 asthma patients older than 1 year of age were classified in 4 steps of severity (GINA): step 1 (32 patients), step 2 (49 patients), step 3 (16 patients) and step 4 (5 patients). Most of asthma patients of steps 1 (31.4%) and of step 2 (48%) had slightly asthmatic symptoms and mildly affected lung function: PEF >80% (23.3%), moderately decreased PEF = 80% - 60% (57.5%). There were 1175 days of school-day or working-day loss. 32% of asthma patients had no specific treatment because of lack of knowledge; 48% of cases received an inappropriate treatment due to misdiagnosis and underestimation. 33.3% of patients used oral long acting β2 agonist (LABA) combined with inhaled corticosteroid (ICS); 25.4% of patients received inhaled LABA combined with ICS in our study; 66.6% of patients had lung function improved on 4th week of treatment
