Expression of surfactant protein A in lung carcinoma and its clinical significance

Abstract: Objective To investigate the expression of surfactant protein A(SP-A)in adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of lung and its clinical significance.Methods The expression of SP-A was determined by immunohistochemical assay (EnVision) in 27 cases of adenocarcinoma,15 cases of squamous cell carcinoma of lung.Then the association of SP-A expression with clinicopathological parameters was analyzed.Results The expression rate of SP-A was significantly higher in adenocarcinoma of lung than that in squamous cell carcinoma of lung(51.85% vs 6.67%,P<0.01).The expression rate of SP-A in papillary adenocarcinoma,bronchioloalveolar carcinoma,acinar adenocarcinoma and musinous adenocarcinoma of lung was respectively 85.71%,50%,40%and 25%.There was no correlation between the expression of SP-A and gender,age,tumor size and lymph node metastasia.Conclusion The expression of SP-A may be associated with histological types of the lung carcinoma,which may be used as important marker in differential diagnosis of adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of lung.
