Study on the risks of low birth weight in Thanh Mien district, Hai Duong province in 2003-2004

Abstract:
A study on 222 women who had given birth from January 2003 to March 2004 at Thanh Mien district, Hai Duong province in order to define several risk factors of low birth weight. Results: the average weight of the newborns was 2805.4 ± 529.7gram. Most of the mothers had secondary education level or lower (78.4%). Average height of mothers was 153.9 ± 5,2cm; 95.5% of mothers had height ≥145 cm. More than 90% of mothers’ weight before pregnant was ≥40 kg. Average number of pregnant was 2.1± 1.2 times. Average weight gain of mothers in 9 months of pregnancy was 7.9±3.4kg. 91% of mothers had been comfortable during pregnancy. Mothers who had uncomfortable feeling during pregnancy had higher risk of low birth weight than mothers who had not that. The rate of ferrous sulfate supplement accounted for 69.4%. There were 41% of mothers used at least one kind of drugs during pregnancy.
