Abstract:
In order to study the sterilization effect of disposable blood packs by ~(60)Co irradia- tion and to estimate the minimum sterili- ty does, the pre-sterilization bioburden of these packs and the D_(10) value of six differe- nt strains of bacteria were investigated. The results revealed that the average bioburden data was less than 10 microbiol cells per blood pack. Among the six strains of mic- roorganisms, Bacillus cereus strain 4001 was found having the highest D(10) value of 1.3 KGy, and therefore, it is suggested that this strain can be used as a biological indicator. According to the formula SD= D_(10) ? 10g (No/N), it is concluded that a total absorbance dosage of 10 KGy being used in radiation sterilization would prov- ide both adequate safety and effectiveness. After post-sterilization, the empty packs can be kept aseptic for a pediod of one year.
