Abstract:
AIM: To study the mechanism and protective effect of rosmarinic acid from Rosmarinus officinalis extract on acute hepatic injury induced by carbon tetrachloride in mice. METHODS: Mouse model of acute hepatic injury was set up by giving CCl_4 abdominally. The effects on ALT,AST avtivities,TG level in serum and MDA level in liver tissue were examined.Histological change and pathological change were observed by means of hematoxylin and eosin staining. The body weight, liver weight of each mice were measured. RESULTS: Rosmarinic acid significantly reduced the activities of ALT,AST,level of TG in serum and level of MDA in liver tissue, restrained the enlargement of liver and reduced the necrosis in pathological observation. CONCLUSION: Rosmarinic acid shows significant inhibitory effects on liver injury induced by CCl_4 in mice. The mechanisms may be related to its effects of reducing lipid peroxidation product.
