A DNBS-induced model of ulcerative colitis in rats

Abstract:
Objective:To build the model of ulcerative colitis(UC) induced by 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (DNBS).Methods:The experimental UC was induced in Wistar rats by enema with 0.25ml of 18% DNBS dissolved in ethanol.Results:DNBS caused severe diarrhea with colorectal bleeding for 2～3 days and mucous diarrhea for 21 days.The pathologic changes of the colon included hyperemia,edema,ulcerations localized in colonic mucosa,depletion of goblet cells and formation of crypt abscess.Conclusion:The DNBS-induced model of UC in rats is similar to human UC,and has such advantages as easy replication,low toxicity and cheapness.
