The Three-Dimension Morphologic Study of Mitral Annulus. Rationale for Annuloplasty

- Abstract: Three-dimension morphologic study of mitral annulus was carried out on 15 fixed and 12 nonfixed heart specimens. The mitral annulus was dynamically reconstructed by the same echocardiographic technic in 11 normal adults. It was found that the mitral annulus has a nonplanar "saddle" shape, and maintains some degree of nonplanarhy throughout the cardiac cycle. Therefore, we assumed that some complications after annuloplasty using rigid prosthetic ring may be attibuted to the changing of the natural shape of mitral annulus.
