Abstract:
The role of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in inflammatory diseases is the subject of increasing research. This review is focused on the role in the immune system including lymphocytes, neutrophils, NK cells and monocytes. The available data and hypotheses as to the manipulation of PUFAs in immune cells are reviewed. Possible mechanisms include alterations in membrane fluidity, eicosanoid synthesis, signal transduction, gene expression and apoptosis.
