Abstract:
The immunohistochemical reactivity of MC3,a monoclonal antibody (MoAb) against human colonic cancer, was studied in 110 specimens with gastric cancer (GC) and 343 specimens with intestinal metaplasia (IM) taken from different diseases, including GC (n=79),dysplasia (n=32),chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG,n=173),gastric ulcer(GU,n=28) and chronic superficial gastritis (CSG,n=31).IM was subtyped into three types:complete (type I) and two classes of incomplete IM (type II and type III) depending on the absence or presence of sulphomucin within the mucin secreting columnar cells. The positive rate of staining with MoAb MC3 in GC was 68.2%.The positive reactivity of MC3 was significantly more common in IM specimens with GC and in those with dysplasia than in those with benign gastric pathology. The positive rate of staining with MC3 in type III IM (48.6%) was significantly higher than those in type I (19.9%) and type II IM (28.0%) (P
