Abstract:
The pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) was measured in 50 normal subjects, 50 patients with emphysema and 31 with asthma.The results showed that the DLCO value of the asthma group was markedly higher than that of the healthy group, while the DLCO/pr% and KCO values of the asthma group were similar to those of the healthy group.The values of DLCO, DLCO/pr% and KCO in the emphysema group were very significantly lower than those in the asthma and healthy groups.The results suggest that the measurement of DLCO is one of the useful pulmonary function tests in differentiation of emphysema from asthma.The mechanism of different DLCO values between emphysema and asthma is discussed.The DLCO values in patients with mild to severe emphysema gradually decreased with the severity of emphysema.The KCO values between the mild emphysema and healthy groups were dramatically different.This is helpful in the early diagnosis of emphysema as combined with other clinical data.
