Abstract:
40 rabbits are used to study the effects of phaco-emulsification and extracap-sular lens removal or; corneal endothelial cells and corneal thickness. With the specular microscope, the preoperative cell morphology, cell density and thickness of cornea are revealed. The endothelial cell counts decrease 16% (at central) and 14% (at the periphery) after the surgery with phaco-emulsification and 25% (central) and 22% (periphery) with extracapsular lens removal. Corneal thickness increases in both groups. Scanning electron microscopy shows some alterations in morphology of endothelial cell injury significantly different in the 2 groups. According to these results the causes of corneal thickness increasing and mechanism of endothelial cell injury are approached and a new procedure preventing the cell injury and decreasing cornea edema in both groups is designed.
