Abstract:
4035 consecutive cardiac catheterizations and/or angiocardiography in 3318 patients were studied. The age of the patients ranged from 3.5 to 56 years. 173 major complications were found. Fatal complications were rare in all age groups (0.06%). The incidence of severe arrhythmias was high(2.4% of all cases), however almost all of them responded well to simple therapeutic measures and only two cases resulted in clinical deterioration and death. The incidence of arterial complications was 0.2% of all catheterizations and angiocardiographies. The complications of heart and that due to catheter occurred in 0.8% of catheterization and 0.4% of angiocardiography respectively. Although the total incidence of major complications in this series was much the same as the reports from abroad, severe complications and death were considerably lower. It was believed that the improvements of catheterization technique and patient management contributed to a decreased mortality and morbidity.
