Abstract:
Free iliac bone graft with microvascular anastomosis was performed on 12 dogs to repair a mandibular defect. Similar operation but no microvascular anastomosis was performed on 8 dogs which served as control. Microscopic morphological observations showed that as the stages of necrosis, revasculari2a-tion, and new bone formation were not present in the dogs with microvascular anastomosis, the healing process was much faster than those without microvascular anastomosis. It is concluded that a free vascularized bone graft is superior to a conventional bone graft without vascular anastomosis especially in repairing a massive bone defect.
