Abstract:
A method, which was a modification of that of Stothert et al, was adopted to establish chronic lung lymph fistula in goats from Chongqing area. The procedure consisted mainly that a segment of the thoracic duct was isolated to serve as the efferent of the caudal mediastinal lymph node to collect lung lymph, and an irrigation tube was inserted for the periodic admnistration of heparin solution to prevent the sanguinous lymph from clotting in the early postoperative days. A series of difficulties including high surgical mortality, stoppage of lymph flow, and chyle contamination of the lung lymph were overcome. A trial of the operated goats on steam inhalation injury precipitated instant increase of lung lymph f .ow and an elevation of lymph/plasma ratio of total protein concentration, which suggested that our animal model was suitable and effective in the study of the exchanges of fluid and protein in the lungs. The details of the technique were described and discussed.
