Abstract:
This experiment was designed to evaluate the osteogenetic effects of different forms of allogenic decalcified bone matrix(DBM). Thirty-nine rabbits were explo-yed and a bony defect of 1cm in length was made on the shaft of the ulnas of these animals. 39 rabbits were divided into 4 groups. In the first group, the bony delects were filled with allopenic decalcified bone powder ; in the second group, with decalcified bone block; in the third group, with undecalcified bone block; and in the fourth group, nothing was filled into the bony delects. Roent-genological and histological observations were made regularly. It was found that after 8-10 weeks, 70-80% of the specimens filled with DBM showed firm union between the host bone and the graft material and no difference could be found between the two forms of DBM, incomplete union occurred in the third group and non-union in the fourth group. It is clear that the osteoge-netic effect of DBM is better than undecalcified bone. It is suggested that decalcified bone powder be used as a graft material to fill bony defects or cavities because it is easily prepared and used, has good plastisity, and can be stored in room temperatmre.
