Abstract:
Purified T lymphocytes of syngenic mice were obtained by nylon-wool filtration followed by EAC rosette sedimentation.Passive intravenous transfusion of immune T lymphocytes to normal syngenic mice showed a mild degree of protection. After being challenged with B. anthracis spores, the survival rate of the recipients of immune T lymphocytes was 77.8%,while that of normal T lymphocytes was 42. 9%.Neonatally thymectomized mice offered less humoral immune response than the sham-thymectomized mice after immunization of adsorbed antigen. The G M T of the former was 1:1.4, and that of the latter was 1:3.0 as determined by counterimmunoelectropho-resis.Reconstitution of T lymphocytes of the thymectomized mice improved the production of specific antibody. This result suggests the helping function of T lymphocytes during the process of formation of antibody.Humoral immunity appears to be the major factor in the protection against B. anthracis infection, as the immune serum offered better protection than immune splenic cells.
