Abstract:
This paper presents the results of a mass survey for abnormal hemoglobins in Xinjiang. 117, 847 sub-jects of 21 nationalities in 31 countries (cities) were examined. Seven hundred and ten instances of abnormal hemoglobins .and thalassemias were identified. Hematological and biochemical investigations as well as clinical and family studies were carried out on 52 prebands. The overall incidence of abnormal hemo- globing was 4.23%. Altogether 17 abnormal hemoglo-bins were detected in 8 out of 21 different nationali-ties with their incidences ranging from 0.21 to 12.8%.They were mainly of the D group, which accounted for 61.3% of the total. The above results indicated that Xinjiang is one of the regions where high incid-ence of abnormal hemoglobins occurs in China with certain ethnic and geographical peculiarities. Types, distributions, clinical and genetic features of these abnormal hemoglobins were briefly discussed.
