Abstract:
This paper reports pathologic examination of mitral valves resected following valve replacements in 110 patients .Comparision of pathological changes were mad e between the following three types : predominant mitral stenosis, mixed, and predominant regurgitation. Besides fibrosis and calcification of mitral valve, there were fibrours Aschoff bodies in the papillary muscles in 63 specimens, of which 11 had typical Aschoff bodies with infiltration of the inflammatory cells. These valvular rheumatic lesions showed a repeated activation of rheumatic fev er on the basis of the inactive changes and it is one of pathologic features of rheumatic disease. There were readhesion, fusion, and stenosis of the mitral valve in 4 patients with previous mitral commissurotomy.
