Surgical Treatment of Ventricular Septa] Defectin 100 Children

Abstract:
100 children (5 to 12 years old) were operated on to repair the ventricular septal defect under cxtracorporeal circulation from January, 1977 to December, 1982. 13 cases out of the 51 who had preoperative cardiac catheterization were found to have severe pulmonary hypertension(pulmonary systolic pressure over 60 mmHg.) Direct suture was used to close the defect in 70 cases and Dacron patch in the rest 30 cases. Postoperatively there were .f cases of early death and two cases of late death.The main complications were pulmonary infections, cerebral embolism, petit mal and postoperative bleeding. The 9-1 cases survived were followed up from -1 months to 6 years. Among them, first degree result was obtained in 81 cases, second degree result in 11 cases and third degree result in 2 cases.The experiance and teachings of the surgical treatment of VSD were discussed. The sslection of suitable surgical candidate, the management of the coexisted anomalies, the techniques of repairing the defect, and the causes of postoperative death were investigated.
