Abstract:
From March 1977 to March 1984, 134 cases of carcinoma of the larynx were treated with different operations. Partial laryngectomy was done in 104 cases, and total laryngectomy in 30 cases. The five-year survival rates of the partial and the total laryngectomy were 72.3% and 55.6% respectively. Laryngeal functions (phonation and protective) were completely restored in all the patients of the partial laryngectomy group. In 79 of the 104 patients (76%) tracheostomy tube was removed, and the respiration function was completely restored. Therefore, it seems that the main advantage of partial laryngectomy is partial or complete restoration of the laryngeal functions after the operation.
